Well actually "God Save The Queen" is still an official national anthem of New Zealand. The greedy buggers have two. But Bruce McLaren was from New Zealand anyway, so I suppose that makes it doubly appropriate.

I don't think Mercedes ever had any intention of protesting. It's just a silly story from a notorious German tabloid paper, fuelled by some silly remarks from a German former F1 racer. It's a nothing story really.

Wouldn't it be easier to play the anthem of the country the driver is from?

Should settle a few debates.

Don't they play both, the winning driver and the winning manufacturer?

God save our gracious Queen,
Above everything in the world,
God save the Queen!
We stand together as brothers.
Happy and glorious,
From the Etsch to the Belt
God save the Queen!
Above all in the world.

Germany, Germany above all,
Long live our noble Queen,
When always, for protection,
Send her victorious,
From the Maas to the Memel
Long to reign over us;
Germany, Germany above all
