Imo the enormous disturbance and resultant community anger of having the sound of F1s screaming away @ 18,000 rpm through the suburbs and echoing right across the bay in the late evening means a night-time GP is politically unfeasable - its as simple as that

Melbourne is a city of 4 million people. Only a relatively small number have an interest in the Grand Prix. Obviously they're happy to put up with the noise and disruption in order to gain the economic benefits of a day-time race.
A night race would be a different story. This won't get approval at state-government level to go ahead. If it did there will be huge protests.
Its just not feasible or fair on the general population to have a F1 event in a city at 9pm. Unless your government is a dictatorship like Singapore.
Melbourne (and I guess Australia) may well have to give up the rights to host an F1 race as a result.
And Bernie may lose a chunk of his admittedly small Australian market if that happens. Not good PR at the very least.

cause ovals have solid walls on the EDGE of the circuit, so lighting can easily be installed.

Think where you'd put lights for a real circuit and how you'd protect the supports etc etc.

Street circuits are bad already without reducing even MORE the open bits to protect lighting !!

Just imagine the consequences of a lighting failure !!

Bernie doesnt care about those issues. The GP is underwritten by the state and federal governments, Bernie gets paid regardless. Its the governments issue if they cant get sponsorship or people dont want to go to the race, otherwise theyre just handing money straight to Bernie.

Perhaps a night F1 race would not be as boring as hell like the day time F1 races are now. I can only watch 5 or 10 minutes of any F1 race. It really is that boring.

It'll probably be better since you won't be able to see anything...

Neither will the drivers too, unless you flood the whole place with light.

The concept might sound interesting, but not at all economical.

Yep adding a huge power bill for illumination is the perfect way to show that F1 is a champion of enviromental concerns

That's why you go with LED headlights and spotlights (if they exist).

Taking into account the spending already involved on carbon fibre tidbits and absurd amenities at the track for the elite, the idea of illuminating a night race isn't that bad.

It works here in America for NASCAR, very successfully too. Implementing it at OZ or Singapore isn't that crazy. (It's not much harder illuminating a track than an oval)

It works for NASCAR because the tracks are in what's basically a stadium, so it's easy to light. Lighting a normal track would be easy as well. But a street circuit? Exceptionally difficult. To light a oval circuit, 4 big lights on each side, simple. Can't do that on the street. Plus, you've gotta find places to put them all, get them high enough not blind drivers and spectators etc.

I know how hard it is to light a circuit for push bikes to race at night - and these guys are going 10 times faster.....
