Audi R8 Nürburgring 24 Racer

Michael Düchting, Bilstein and Sport Auto have combined to create a race version of a car named after a race car (a bit ironic I think). Using the R8's engine block but decreasing displacement to 4.0 L, the engine produces 530HP @ 7,800 rpm and 353 lb.-ft. @ 7,000 rpm. The car weighs in at 2,755 lbs and is in the SP 7 class, which I think is the second highest class where all the GT3s are in. Last year, only the Viper(s) were in SP 8 if memory serves.

Pictures below.

Is the engine, the same (or similar) as the one in the racing Spykers?

I have no idea. What is the deal with the one powering the Spykers? I heard it was recently upgraded.

You'd hit it anyway, ugly or not. Just like Johnny's mom.

how does one reduce the engine displacement whilst keeping the same engine block?

Shortening the stroke, probably.

I'm not exactly sure about the one in the racing car but it was the same as the street car with some modifications IIRC. The engine in the road car was indeed upgraded. They used a 4.0l block from Audi which was taken out of production. They now use the 4.2l as is used in the RS4. It nearly made the company go bankrupt as they couldnt deliver any vehicles, whilst they redesigned the cars around the new engine.

A con-rod lengthening would keep the same stroke, but raise place the piston in contact with the top of the cylinder if it was already a tight fit.

To shorten the stroke a new crank shaft with less throw would be used, and then the block reduced in hight to suit. This can have the beneficial effect of increasing the bore:stroke ratio and, to a small degree, lowering the engine's centre of gravity.
