    1971 GMC Sprint SP

    HORSEPOWER: 365
    TORQUE: 465lbs-ft
    ENGINE: 454ci V8

The Sprint was introduced in 1971 as GMC's equivalent to the El Camino. It was based on the 3rd and 4th generation El Camino. Both trucks shared all platforms and powerplants. It has been rumored that the Sprint was inspired by the 1968 Pontiac LeMans El Camino Concept. The "SP" shared everything with the El Camino SS. For the 5th generation, the Sprint was discontinued in 1979, and replaced in 1984 by the Caballero.

All that power to the rear wheels...And the rear wheels have no weight on them... Handling should be pretty interesting i think...

That is a picture of my 1971 GMC Sprint SP-454, one of an estimated 25 built. For more information on these vehicles, go to http://www.chevelles.com/sprint

I'd like to correct a few pieces of information presented in this thread.

The GMC Sprint was built from 1971 to 1977. Both the El Camino and the GMC equivalent were re-styled in 1973, and then again in 1978. From 1978 to 1987, the GMC version of the El Camino was called the "Caballero". The Caballero was produced starting in 1978, not 1984.

According to vehicle specifications published by GM, the 1968-1972 El Camino (and the 1971-1972 GMC Sprint) actually have a slightly better weight distribution than a comparably-equipped Chevelle coupe. Strange but true.

The "SP" version was GMC's equivalent to the Chevrolet "SS" Super Sport package. Any GMC Sprint SP is extremely rare, so much so that the vast majority of car enthusiasts have to idea they even exist. Most have met an unfortunate fate - abused as trucks or stripped of their performance parts for use in Chevelles, etc., or stripped of their true identity in an attempt to produce a more-recognizable El Camino version. But word is slowly getting out on these rare vehicles. A set of four used "GMC" center caps for a 1971-72 GMC Sprint SP recently sold on eBay for over $1,000. I sold an extra 1971-72 Sprint "GMC" grille emblem (in need of re-chroming) for $500 a couple years ago.

Here is picture of another 1971 GMC Sprint. The bed lid and two-tone green/gold color is not stock. The "Lime Green" metallic and "Placer Gold" metallic colors were available on 1971 GMC Sprints, but they didn't come together on the same vehicle.
