I once made a big search on the web and found absolutely nothing about this car. Unfortunately this frankenstein car didn't went on after his first bad succeeded attempt at 1970 Corsica rally with Rauno Aaltonen.
It had the 2.8 engine, 275bhp and weighted 960kgs. Ironically, they retired because they had to many punctures and ran out of tires!
Also on Corsica but the year before, Ford had tried the Capri 2.3 V6 engine on the Escort MKI. Mikkola finished 16th with it.

Strange how I never saw that! I'm a member there (an odd enough so is Napolis). I don't remeber ever seing you there, at least with that name.
There are some very knowledgeable members there. That small part of the forums worth a thousand times the whole site and the magazine together.
Since you're linking to a local and portuguese forum, there's no big problem with that. It's not a competitor. It's like if I had linked you with www.gtclube.com. No arm done there.

I don't remember if i'm a member but is possible in the past I have made a registration.
Yesterday, because another model (the strange Opel question I thread) I go to the AH Forum, Google casuality. And, like to me normal, I give a good (and long) looking for the pages. That's the way I found this photo.
If you know the participant who post the photo, tell her and is possible he gives more information!...

Unfortunately he's the only moderator of of that section, who I don't know personally. However we've talked through PM's , so I might do that.

This indeed an experiment from BMW, it's a shame didn't pursue that option, on paper the car look very promising. Oh and Ford later tried the GT70 in Corsica only to found the same problem as Lancia with the Startos. Who would link an exotic mid engined sports car with the road going cars?

That's not exactly the story nor the reason why they let the project disappear. Although that could have been a consequence.

The GT70 was a project that only happened due to Ford Motorsport boss, Stuart Turner. The main reason was because Turner didn't believe it would be possible for the Escort to win at Monte Carlo as many times or as easily as it had been done with the Minis in the days in wich he was in charge of BMC motorsport division. So he decided they needed something more extreme.
The GT70 was tried with both a 2.0 BDA engine and the Capri Cologne V6. Drivers prefered the lightness and agility of the first.

The problems that came up on the project were:
    - the fact that it had to run in Gr. 6 (since it was a prototype) and therefore not being allowed to enter some events.
    - having a soft chassis. It was too flexible to provide a decent handling.
    - having almost no common parts with Ford's production cars, making it too expensive to build.

It's a shame it didn't go ahead. It looked great.

I know, I know, I didn't mention that as the reason they cancelled, but rather as one of the problems/consequences they might have encountered.

    Hi,

if you got to the German BMW 02 website (BMW 02 Club e.V.) and search the forum for 3002, you will find some pictures. The car seems to be still alive but in bad shape.

Yes the 1970 Tour de Corse. After that they may have realised it wasn't such a good idea.
