    Amelia Island 2012 Concours

Attendance was easily 50% more than last year, and participants brought what everyone was there for: a great car show.

We arrived too late on Friday to catch the Gooding auction, but the RM preview always presents some tasty bits. Such as this '53 Porsche cab... supercharged no less. You don't see DKW Kombis or Buckle Goggomobil Darts every day, either.

Mmmmm. Bugatti Type 46 Superprofile Coupe, which sold for $1,017,500. The impressive scale model was part of another display.

Speaking of scale models, check out these scratch-builts! Jaw dropping detail.

Wow, looks like a really top notch event.

Wish the NY Auto show was high end stuff like this. It's not really all that special.

However, lately there has been a small vintage collection downstairs.

The DKW combi was shown last year at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue. It was now one of the lots in the RM auction at Amelia and sold for 60k.

    The models are fantastic.

The Deek made record money while the two microcars (Goggo Dart and Rovin D4) both sold for rather tall money to one Malaysian buyer who apparently hadn't really inspected them. He paid $27,500 and $27,000 respectively; after they were outside he really looked at them close for the first time. He didn't seem pleased with his decision considering their condition... the Dart in particular was pretty ratty, the Rovin looked good but had clutch/gearbox issues.

More models, some were Pocher kits built to museum quality with customization, most were scratch-built... the gentleman who built the Duesenberg was giving an interview while this photo was taken. I spoke with him briefly about his machine and jeweler skills, he seemed genuinely pleased so many wanted to know more of how he built it. Truly a piece of art, wish I had a camera capable of sharp closeups.

Not sure if it's the same guy, but Jay Leno interviewed a high end model maker at his shop.

Different guy, same amazing skills. Modelers at this level are jewelers really, working with a range of materials that require exacting finish work.

A few race cars at the RM preview... the impressively historic Rondeau and Porsche RSR will be auctioned at Monaco in May.
The Galaxie was a "tribute" car, the Riley & Scott 'Vette was Paul Newman's in which he won his last race... it sold for $275,000.
