Best fuel tank placement for a front-mid engine sport car?

IMO locating the fuel tank behind the rear wheels is not only dangerous in a crash but its also poor weight distribution.

I'm not sure if Dodge Viper fuel tank placed over the differential is actually an improvement.

Maybe Corvette C6 twin fuel tanks just before the rear wheels is the way to go?
Although you're literally sitting on the fuel tank.

In the Honda Jazz/Fits the driver is sitting on the fuel tank. Though that does bring it to the centre of the vehicle.

The closer the fuel tank is to the CofG the better it is in terms of having the car behave consistently.....and lower the better....

Matra fitted a plastic fuel tank ABOVE the engine on the Bagheera in it's mid engine RWD layout !!! AND it's 70s plastic, I wonder how long I can expect it to last

Just to be clear, front and front mid are basically the same thing. With that said, the Viper location is also used by the Honda S2000, the Miata (all generations), and the Pontiac Solstice. The Corvette's twin tank solution is more expensive but can sit lower in the car and closer to the center of the car.

My father had a 1964 Simca 1000 which was rear engine, rear wheel drive.

The gas tank was vertically mounted behind the rear seat and in front of the engine.
I think the rear axle was below, and a little to the rear of the gas tank.

Basically, passengers in the rear seat were leaning on the gas tank with a cushion and mounting brackets to separate them.

Better I suppose than a Jeep from Korean War vintage. The gas tank, with a cushion, was the driver's seat.

The UrQuattro and Sport Quattro also have their tanks behind the back seat, vertically....

Consider this though, most modern race car's tank is right behind the driver....in most cases just a piece of carbon fiber and a foam seat between them..

The fuel tanks in my old BMW E30 were under the back seat. Fact is, it's real hard to put a fuel tank somewhere that's not next to a passenger spot but has some protection in case of an impact.
