Aspen is Chrysler's New SUV

Chrysler will add a new full-size SUV to its lineup during the 2006 calendar year -- and the name of the new vehicle will be the Aspen, according to a report in The Detroit News. The new 'ute will be a version of the Dodge Durango seven-passenger SUV and will arrive in Chrysler showrooms in 2006. The name Aspen, of course, was applied to a Chrysler sedan from the 1970s that was plagued by recalls along with its twin, the Plymouth Volare. Chrysler is expected to show a version of the SUV at the Detroit auto show in January.

I think this is the wrong time to introduce a fullsize SUV. I'll bet you any money that it will flop just like the Dodge Aspen

I don't think you're the target demographic for this car, Tony, and I have a feeling it will sell well just like every other full-size SUV. Sure, the sales have dropped somewhat lately with gas prices, but companies don't and can't think short-term based on something like that. They have to plan long-term and the sales of full-size SUVs have been steadily climbing for the past 10 years. Even if they were to introduce the Aspen tomorrow and full-size SUV sales drop incrementally for the next 10 years, they will still make a killing and they will still boost their profits.

GM still sells more H2's than all hybrids combined. The SUV craze is going nowhere.

i'm not sure of that, GM is slowing down production on Hummers and are in junk bond status, while the Prius alone is in short supply because many people want them, espically in california. so I don't believe your statemant is true.

wow, I didn't think I'd see the comments during the 79 oil crisis repeated again !!
Hanging on to the old market idea of big is beautiful ultimately made the Japanese motor industry back then.
It CAN drop very quickly ..... except ........

Profits before envirionment anyone ?

What does any of that have to do with the success of the Aspen? Absolutely nothing. If you haven't noticed, the high gas prices here has had very little affect on the purchases of SUVs. If you haven't noticed, there are no long lines at gas stations, there is no shortage of gas and there are no riots in the streets. This isn't the same as the oil crisis of the 70's. Reliance on the automobile has grown. Salaries have increased. Quality of living has increased. Spendable income has increased. This isn't a crisis. It's an annoyance. And buying habits of consumers don't change around an annoyance.

Chill Matt !!

I was only pointing out that comments about the long term sale sin light of a short term dip are EXACTLY what was being said at the 79 crisis.

You're taking the analogy far to far to take the message intended
I'm well aware there are no lines, BUT the only nation in the world NOT trying to reduce reliance on larger vehicles is the US. It can't/won't go on forever like that.

Salaries are irrelevant as the person will just buy another vehicle for the same price once the SUV is priced out by tax or fuel.

NOBODY said it was a crisis

Chill and read the points made.

The industry said what you're saying about leer operated brakes and then drum brakes and then a million other things. All which turned on their head VERY quickly

Closer to UCP domain think about the XJ220. A definite world beater car that became impossible to sell

I'm not defending the US energy policies in any way. I'd be the last person you'd hear do that. I'm also not saying I love SUVs. I'd never own one myself. I was just initially responding to Prius' blanket statement based solely on his dislike for SUVs.

ah sorry Matt, quoting my inputs made me think it was just those points raised the issue.

it does seem a little "late" to be getting into the market with a large SUV tho' and I still think they'll not be successful as the mindset changes and bang goes more money that could have been spent maybe focussing on making longer term profits. A lot will depend on how it drives I guess.

Oh, please. You know we don't pay attention to how cars drive in the US.
