NASCAR now mandates 2-4 final drive gears for a track. For Bristol, it might be a 4.99, a 5.14, and a 5.20. This just started this year. Teams were getting way out of hand with having 10+ final drives on hand for a given track, and the RPM's were going higher and higher (10,500 at the end of the straights at some of the 1.5-2.0 mile ovals.). Now they're back down to ~9500. I don't know if the transmission ratios are mandated too, but I'm pretty sure they're not.
My vote goes to the most versatile motor ever. The SBC.
