Nice pictures of an old favourite of mine.
Some additional info; the figure (120) you quoted for bhp may have been correct for your country, in Europe the 914-6 was advertised with 110bhp. Same as the 911T, from which model it took its engine. Also, the 914 was called "VW-Porsche" over here. The best of the bunch, and very exotic was the 916; a fixed-roof version with a wider body and the 2,4litre 190bhp 'S'-engine. And then of course, there were the far-less desirable but underrated 914-4 models with 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0litre fourcylinder VW-engines (output between 80 - 100bhp). Of the 918 model (basically a 916 with an 8-cylinder racing engine) only one model existed; especially built as a birthday gift for dr. Porsche himself. I remember 914's being used as patrol cars by the Dutch national trafficpolice. A sight to remember.

Hansv, one small correction... there were 2 factory 914-8s made, one silver, and one red. Ferdinand Piech received the red one, and the silver one went to the company. Ferdinand's red one was sent to the museum after 10,000kms.

They both used a de-tuned version of the 908 race car's engine. The silver one was carburated and produced around 260hp. Dr.Piech's red one was fuel injected and it made around 300hp.

Thanx for the info. Reading your post brought back the whole story and seeing the pictures explained the slip-up; the silver '918' having the innocent looks of a 914-6 (or even a 914-4) probably made me forget the little gem....

Doesn't the Fiat Bertone X 1/9 looks a bit alike the Porsche 914? It was introduced in the late 70's early 80's (not sure when).

The 914 doesn't really look like a X1/9, the X1/9 i think is the prettier car, but is also built like cardboard. 914's are all good, but i wouldn't go out and buy one tommorrow given the money, no offence to Egg nog, but there not my cup of tea.....

Not looking at the taillights I find them pretty similar. The shape is almost the same and both have pop up lights.

the X1/9 looks like a wedge from the front, while the 914 looks rounded and more soft, i fail to see the resemblence.....other than them both being targa tops.

I'd like to put it like this; the X1/9 is the prettier design, the 914 has more character (ugly is such a nasty word). I would go for character if i had the choice between these two.
By the way; the X1/9 was introduced in the early 1970's; that makes its desgin even more remarkable, I think.

Peronally, I find the 914 to be the ugliest Porsche (if you can say that a Porsche is ugly) ever.

The best Porsches would definetly be like the 1956 Spider or the Beatle

The Beetle wasn't technically a Porsche, although Ferdinand Porsche designed a prototype of the Beetle.

Personally I think the 914 is quite a handsome car, looks very cool in black. I have a highly tuned 914/4 2.0 in Need For Speed - Porsche 2000 and is has put many a 911 to shame

Sure, it's not exactly sleek, but it's cool in a very different way from most other Porsches...
