Alfa Romeo SZ 19891991

The Alfa Romeo SZ (Sprint Zagato) (ES-30 or Experimental Sportscar 3.0 litre) was a high performance limited production sports car/road-concept car built between 1989 and 1991 with partnership via Centro Stile Zagato, Centro Stile Alfa Romeo and Centro Stile Fiat. Robert Opron of the Fiat design studio was responsible for the initial sketches while Antonio Castellana was largely responsible for the final styling details and interior. Only the 'Z' logo of Zagato was kept.

Mechanically and engine-wise, the car was based on the Alfa Romeo 75, production being carried out by Zagato at Via Arese near the Alfa factory in Milan. The thermoplasic injection moulded composite body panels were produced by Italian company Carplast and French company Stratime.

The suspension was modified by Giorgio Pianta, engineer and team manager of the Lancia and Fiat rally works team. The brakes were taken from the Alfa 75 Turbo Evoluzione. A hydraulic ride-height system was added.

The two seater hard roof version also saw a convertible version, the RZ (for Roadster Zagato), produced from 1992 until 1994.

* Engine Spec: 3.0 V6 (2959cc), 210 PS DIN (154 kW)
* SZ : Only one official colour scheme was available: Red/grey
* One in black for Andrea Zagato
* Three in silver, one in pearlescent white
* 1035 SZs were produced (planned: 1000), about 100 were exported to Japan.

Not beautiful but fantastic. Apparently only one was converted to RHD, from a LHD car, by Autodelta.

It was nicknamed 'Il Mostro' by the Italians... and for quite a good reason!

However, you can't say that it doesn't have character.

I'd say it's not beautiful in the classic aception of the term. I personally prefer round shapes and clean lines that flow, but that's just my opinion.

I usually do too. However, I have found that Italians can make angles and hard lines look good.

I've always love this design, I think it's a brilliant example of how boxy can be awesome. Looks fantastic.

I like this car a lot, but that has got to be the ugliest rear end in motor history!
