I remember the days when people would talk about drivers doing 20 'qualifying' laps in a stint because they had to make up time, or they were annoyed. If the tyres are so limited in their performance as is being suggested then that's simply not an option, which is a shame for fairly obvious reasons. Personally I much preferred it when stints were limited by fuel rather than tyres, as it seemed that the drivers could push harder for longer.

The could push more if they are allotted more tires to suit. The issue IMO is the fact that they basically have no such option right now. In a sense right now its no different than 2005 when they have 1 set of tire for entire race and they have to manage that and not go out and sprint. Except now too they HAVE to use their race set before the race since they are qualifying at least 3 times(if you are competitive), which uses up part of the finite tire life as well....Worse too, the tires also have to handle full fuel load for full race distance....

The solution isn't more tyres.. if they push real hard on the current rubber they'd have to pit every 8 laps, which isn't going to work either. If they had tyres that could do 15-20 quali laps, then there'd be more of an incentive to either 1 or 2 stop conservatively or 2 or 3 stop with some banzai action.
