This probably sounds crazy to you, but believe it or not there are actually people out there that prefer a Boxster to the 911. Many of those people also have no problem stretching their budget for a 911 or something more expensive from another brand if they felt like it. You can't judge a book by its cover the same way you can't judge a Boxster driver and think they must have insufficient income. That's just ridiculous. No offense.

I feel bad for those that walk into a Porsche dealership with the mindset that they need to be seen in a 911 to be taken seriously. Actually no I don't, because they're idiots.

I would have the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet I think the Boxster S is for people who want a porsche and can’t afford a 911. but as other people have said the 911 does not look good as a convertible.

If I wanted a convertible I would not buy a porsche anyway

Because it's an educated, original, and thought-provoking automotive analysis from our resident expert. Boxsters are for weak little girls. 911s are for cool rich guys and stuff. I think I heard Rich Christensen say so one time. Duh

Well if it really needs to be a convertible i'd take the Boxter S, in dark mettalic blue with boxter spyder wheels and the design sport package. At least the Boxter was made to be a convertible in the first place, and please shorten the travel on the clutch pedal. I'll be picking it up tomorrow, have it ready by then! Thank you.

    Easy choice here.
If you want a more comfortable but sporty GT-type cabriolet with great every day driveability, get the Carrera. If you want a puristic, sporty roadster, get the Boxster. My personal choice in this comparison would be the Boxster- it IS a real Porsche and also the best-handling car in it's class. But in the end it's rather irrelevant what you choose, because you can't really go wrong.

    That doesn't change my view.
Money no object I prefer the 911, but I wouldn't be upset with a Boxster or a Cayman if I was in the market for a 50 grand sportscar.

However, I have gradually changed my opinion about the 911. It used to be my favourite car, but now while I still like it I think it just something to own at some point in my life and then move on.

    911 Cabriolet:

Sorry Quasimodo, I know it hurts to be a Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

Is there anything special about the 911 Targa?

Not sure what that car is catering to, in my opinion.

Originally the people that wanted an open 911. Became less and less relevant as successive generations of 911 Cabriolets were introduced from the early 80's.

There used to be something special about the targa, when you could take the roof panel off. Now its just a glass roof Carrera. Not even a special difference apart from the edgy C-pillars. If you like a lot of light in your car all the time, that'd be the one to get.

You can also open the back window in the Targa (or at least you could), technically making it a hatchback.

They probably wanted to build a convertible with added roll over protection, and that's what they came up with.

Apparently if you like extra light in your car, you must be some sort of rugged outdoorsman who needs 4WD...

EDIT: The Targa does have the advantage of not looking like a beached whale.
