Porsche to fill new performance slot.

    What platform I wonder.

Recently, we received word that Porsche was prepping a Ferrari-fighting model that would slot above the 911 and below the upcoming 918 within the Porsche lineup, and now, we have confirmation that this new sports car is, in fact, on its way. The German automaker was tired of seeing Ferrari face little competition in its class. Matthias Mueller, Porsche CEO, is pushing the automaker to produce a sports car that will cost between 250,000 and 400,000 Euros (about $363,000 to $580,000), and has its sights set squarely on taking sales away from Italy's prancing horse. For now, that's about all we have in the way of details. Still, we expect good things –

    Porsche R8?

By the way, isn't that what the 911 Turbo does for a lot less money...?

I guess that whatever this turns out to be will probably outperform every Ferrari in existence (except maybe the Enzo replacement- but they have the 918 for that). Porsche doesn't do "overrating".

Which car of its class? Clearly not the 458 because that has its work already cut out with the competition. The only two that are in the price range Porsche is talking about is the 599 GTB whatever. It looks like Porsche are just creating a car to fill the gap in between two price marks. Geez they have never done that before...

Does the 959 and the Carrera GT fit in that price range?

    I was hoping for a FR coupe, something like a 928 or a 944.

Something affordable for once would be very nice, especially when you keep your automotive licenses to yourself.

Yeah, because Lambo, McLaren and Aston Martin have had it so easy.

The 959 and Carrera GT were the 918s of their time.

So it would be something slightly below that then.

Something like the Audi R8 or the Lamborghini Gallardo then.

Oh wait, the company owns both cars already.

But if it would be a flat 8, it might be something interesting indeed. I don't remember a flat 8 engined car within the last 20, maybe 30 years.

I think rather than build a cajun or a scaled down panamera, they should not only build a super car, but also a super GT, and a Hot Hatch. A flat twelve super GT based on the panamera. A Flat four hothatch could be shared with a new roadster. The super car could have the flat twelve. Or if they want to be under achievers (HA) they could build a flat 8.

    Indeed.

But then, as I said, isn't that waht the Turbo does already? I mean the Porsche Turbo S must at least be as fast as 458 or a 599. Unless they want to fight the FF or something.

EDIT I can't think of any road going production flat eight-engined car, and the only other flat eight cars I can think of are the 908 and the 804.

Different cars for different people. When these cars sell at $200,000 or above, it makes a difference when you pull up in a SL65 AMG or a SLR McLaren.

Heck, going on cylinders, the AMG has more, so shouldn't it be better?

If the SL were to be maxed out, I think you'd only be off by about 30K or 40K, max.

But when you pull up at the country club, it makes a huge difference.

In a straight line, they're both about the same anyway.

This would still work if it's a niche car and if it's low volume enough.

But I hope you never ask about the price.

I'm not into this country club thing.

This must be why I don't see the point.

    Or something.

Not related with the Panamera 'Coupe' or 928 revival?
