BMW acquired the John Cooper Works brand

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG said on Tuesday it is acquiring the rights to the brand name John Cooper Works under a deal signed yesterday and effective from January 2007. No financial details were disclosed.
A BMW spokesman said the acquisition is in line with BMW's strategy to strengthen the company's MINI brand.
John Cooper Works currently fits BMW's Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S models with tuning kits and accessories for customers who want to make the cars faster and sportier.
In what could easily become MINI's equivalent of the BMW "M' brand, JCW now has the engineering and development resources of BMW at their disposal, ensuring the John Cooper Works models a pivotal role in the overall MINI brand strategy well into the future.
It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

they had been working on it for months, with the final, we're gonna do it coming out a few months ago.

i dont see any real plusses or minuses out of the deal, with the exception of maybe an expanded product line, and even more over the top models like the GP.

I think there's a fundamental change. The news piece says that BMW has acquired the rights of the JCW name, it says nothing that they have biught the outfit. What that probably actually means is that now all the tuning programme will be carried in house by BMW with little or no imput from the original staff of JCW. That might not make much of a difference in the result, but it just another sing of the Germaness of the Mini.

I see, the news bit didn't mention it.

Anyway, in my opinion, the Mini Mk II isn't better compared to the Mk I, so I don't care much for it either...

German Minis, German-owned English Tuning-house names...

What ever the name, expect "M" levels of performance for the Mini in the near future.

i, personally, am excited for it. although there is something lost from the supporting small industry thing.

Will it be the same people doing it or will the M-division do the works, so to speak.

Small industry? Yeah, it's the Starbucks syndrome, where even small, well-located coffee joints get acquired by the corporate giant.

EDIT: Speculation ended, just read the link...

what this also means is that everything will now be installed at the factory, vice at the dealer for additional labor fees, etc. and there will likely be many more options to make your car faster, all orderable from the dealer.

well, im off to work again, be back in a few hours.

Hi-performance will be cheaper and better integrated and covered by the manufacturer warranty. Win Win.

Were JCW mods, when it was independant, covered by BMW warranty?

That's not surprising. It's like Mercedes taking over AMG. Nothing special really.

covered by warranty, and in the last year or 2, engine mods were installed at the factory. but the other stuff, like body kit, wheels, etc, you had put on by your dealer.
