The only one you missed was the Pontiac 8 that was scrapped in the same year as the packard. i also read that there are still some 8s in use today, mainly in luxury coaches.

One question to the experts here: was there ever a 7 cylinder engine in a car? I only know about some marine ones.

Well, the last straight-8--a sad story, I would say. During the 2.5 liter F1 of the late fifties, Mercedes was not the only straight-8. Gordini also produced a one, with eight individual exhaust pipes ( that must have sounded great!). And finally, and sadly, the Bugatti Type 251. In 1956, this car designed by Gioacchino Colombo of Ferrari V-12 fame, appeared. The car was mid-engined, transversely mounted. It appeared once,IIRC, at the French GP,driven by Maurice Trintignant, and was hugely uncompetitive.

Ferrari 250. No question. From a $60K 250 GTE to a $20M 250 GTO you will not find a smoother engine can can rev, deliver just enough torque right where you need it and (if well maintained) be more reliable.
