The Helmholtz theory is that because the exhaust comes in waves/pulses that can be used to bounce back towards the exhaust valve and then again towards the exit of the exhaust pipe.

With careful tuning - knowing temp, stroke volume and speed you can optimise the timing of the pulses so that the 2nd run toward the exhaust creates a greater vacuum in the pipe than a normal exhaust system. This extra vacuum on the outside of the exhaust valve helps scavenge the burnt combustion gasses when the exhaust valve opens, promoting better filling of the cylinder with the fresh intake charge.+

Now the true optimisation will be at a very specific rpm, but you will get benefits in a band either side of this.

That's also why performance cars have long exhaust headers.. and Mazda's Skyactiv-G. Autozine has a nice write up of that. Basically it's about getting the most residual exhaust gas out of the chambers as possible, so more fresh mixture can go in at a lower temperature.

I saw those a few months ago.

    Wonderful.

I may have to grab the 962 print. That car and its livery has captivated me since before I knew squat about cars or what it was.

Bought an Iphone 5 on its release date. I needed to upgrade my Blackberry Torch (piece of crap) and my 2-year contract ended in August.... so perfect timing, just waiting on delivery now.

Yesterday I signed a lease for a new place (to rent). It has some definite luxuries over my current joint - a bedroom, an oven that's in celcius (for reference, we went metric in the mid 60s..) and a place to put a washing machine! I'm moving this weekend.

Bought an Apple USB keyboard for $28.00 USD after using that giftcard my cousin gave me when I graduated high school three years ago for that Mac I got working for $28. Best of all? Thanks to Apple's wtf compatibility standards, it's not even fully compatible with Tiger.

That makes SO much sense. Hopefully I can keep using it in twenty years.
