It's never to late to comment on the A3's epic fail.

For an idea of parts pricing, you should familiarize yourself with this site:
    RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog
That lists suggested MSRP for parts. You can do better by ordering at some online places. This BMW dealer often has parts for quite a bit less than suggested retail:
    bmwautopartsdealer.com

Oil changes tend to be fairly easy on BMWs. Here's a recommended service interval schedule:
    BMW Service Intervals
If you plan to keep the car for a long time (10+ years, say), you should do more frequent oil changes.

Some independent German motor shops will charge considerably less than the dealer for labor, but parts prices will be about the same. Some shops won't like it if you bring your own parts (even if OEM), for obvious reasons.

Bear in mind that the 335i's N54 engine has had problems with its high pressure fuel pumps failing (just google it), and a TSB for slight hesitation in throttle response. If it hasn't already been done for this car, the work may be covered under warranty. Unless your mom intends to really use the power difference on any regular basis, a 328xi would be a more practical and reliable choice IMO. It would suck to have the fuel pump go out during a snowstorm. The turbocharged car will be better for higher altitudes, however.
