1979 Ford Cortina vs 2005 Ford Fiesta

Well I'm still new to these forums so if I do something wrong please correct me.

Ford Cortina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ford Fiesta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    A 1979 3.0L Ford Cortina vs a 2005 1.4L Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is just a normal 1.4L (no Zetec).

I'm wondering which one is faster/ better in comparison to:

    0-60
    0-100
    Top speed
and I'm not sure if it is determinable (due to lack of information) but also which one would be better on a track.

Now my logic tells me that the Ford Cortina will be faster in 0-100 because I really don't want to believe that a 1.4L could outspeed a 3.0L.

    But the Cortina is heavy.

Oh and for comparison reasons I'm told the Cortina uses the same engine as a Ford Capri.

but back on topic; the Fiesta will probably be faster on a track because of power to weight ratio.

    What do you guys think?

The Cortina is FR and the Fiesta FF (I think that's what it's called).

The reason for all this is because I'm trying to figure out if my grandma's car is faster than my sisters boyfriend's.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Cortina wasn't that much heavier than the Fiesta.

Any idea on the power of the Cortina, or on the engine of the Fiesta?
    Cheeking their papers may help.

Also, the Cortina, assuming it's a pre-1979 model, doesn't look heavier than the Fiesta for what I found regarding its 2.0 and 2.3 versions.

Surely the Cortina isn't a safe, modern appliance, but perhaps it may be funnier to drive.

    1979 MK IV(V) Cortina:

    0-60mph:12.2secs
    Weight: 1128kgs
    Power:108bhp
    Torque:130lb/ft

    1.4 2005 Fiesta
    0-100 km/h (0-62 mph): 13.2 seconds
    Weight: 1110 kg
    Power: ~ 79 HP
    Torque: ~91.5 ft.lbs

The 1.4l is just a small engine. Unless you force some air in it, it's not doing much.

I would still put my money on the fiesta on a winding track just because of modern suspension and chassis rigidity.

The Fiesta has definitively a traction advantage, but i think the torque difference would help the Cortina (was the MKIV/MKV still RWD?). For that reason, i put my two cents on the Cortina.

Wow the Cortina's a lot lighter than I thought.
I guess it seems that Cortina will be faster but the Fiesta better on a track (which were my first impressions).

    Cortina's a 4 door saloon and the Fiesta a 5 door hatchback.

    Thanks guys

Rear wheel drive gives you a traction advantage, altough I don't know if this will be compensate by modenr tyres on the Fiesta.

At the HP range we're talking, the RWD won't be all that big an advantage.
