    Cloaked with distinctive and dynamic exterior styling, the 2007 CR-V debuts with a wide assortment of new technology and standard comfort and convenience features.     A highly rigid body and fully independent suspension result in a quiet cabin and smooth, agile handling performance. The 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and standard 5-speed automatic transmission provide an excellent balance of power (166-horsepower) and fuel economy (EPA-rated 23/30 city/highway mpg, 2WD).

    A dynamic and emotional forward cabin blends the familiar CR-V identity into a sculpted lower body with a rugged lower body appearance. A new double grille and a side profile with an arched window shape accent the CR-V's distinctive and upscale presence. Adding to the clean lines, the spare tire now resides under the rear floor as opposed to the exterior of the tailgate; benefiting aesthetics, visibility and garage-ability.

    The previous generation CR-V (2002 - 2006) set a new standard for vehicle safety when the 2002 CR-V became one of the first few vehicles ever to earn the federal government's top five-star crash safety rating for both frontal and side impacts. The 2007 CR-V builds on Honda's industry-leading emphasis on safety and outdistances the competition by implementing new technology and features that go beyond conventional industry standards with innovations such as the ACE Body Structure and a pedestrian safety design, just to name two.

    The 2007 CR-V has an entirely new body design. The exterior width has increased by 1.4 inches to 71.6 inches while the body length has decreased by 3.1 inches (due mostly to the relocation of the spare tire from the rear bumper to underneath the rear cargo area). The length of the vehicle minus the spare tire remains nearly the same.

    The unit-body construction features extensive use of strategically strengthened areas with expanded use of high strength steel to provide high levels of rigidity. Improved NVH was also targeted and the new model features extensive use of the latest noise absorption materials to help reduce engine and road noise for an ultra-quiet cabin.
    Comprised of a front MacPherson strut layout and a rear multi-link suspension, the highly rigid body and independent suspension offer an engaging driving experience rare for this class of vehicle.

    The CR-V is available in three trim levels - the well-equipped LX, the fully-featured EX and the upscale EX-L.

    The inside of the 2007 CR-V blends Honda's renowned ergonomics and clever storage integration with classy, modern and efficient architecture. More standard features and available new features like a navigation system with voice recognition highlight the dedication to taking the interior to an entirely new level. The increased body width allows the seats to be wider and more supportive, and a newly-designed retractable center tray table not only provides the prerequisite beverage holders, but EX and above models also contain an additional 12V power outlet and auxiliary audio jack. CR-V models outfitted with a leather interior (EX-L) provide a spacious multi-function center console that can accommodate up to 24 compact discs (on models without the navigation system).

    On EX and EX-L models, a dual-deck cargo shelf provides additional storage options in the cargo area and can hold up to 20 pounds, while providing enough clearance underneath for grocery bags or items such as a folded stroller. Key interior dimensions remain similar to the generous proportions of the 2006 model.

    The latest generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition and rearview camera, available on the CR-V EX-L, features a 6.5-inch motorized display that opens and closes for access to the internal single-disc CD player and a digital audio card reader that can play MP3 and WMA files from CompactFlash(R) cards. The navigation system features more than 7 million points of interest and can control the audio system. The voice recognition is capable of recognizing and entering numbers, street names and cities.

    For 2007, all audio systems are more powerful with at least 160 watts (LX, EX). Auxiliary audio input jacks are standard equipment on all trim levels, allowing for portable music device playback through the audio system. Each audio system also features MP3/WMA CD playback capability and Speed-sensitive Volume Control (SVC) that automatically adjusts the volume based on vehicle speed. The LX trim level has a four-speaker 160-watt audio system with a single-disc CD player. The EX and EX-L add two speakers (tweeters) and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer (console mounted on navigation-equipped models). XM Satellite Radio is standard on the EX-L. The EX-L with Navigation audio system increases power output to 270 Watts and delivers sound through seven speakers, including a subwoofer.

    Powered by Honda's 2.4-liter, Dual-Over Head Cam, i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine, the CR-V offers refined and responsive performance with good fuel economy and low emissions (CARB LEV II ULEV). A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment on all CR-Vs, and a traction-enhancing Real Time 4WD system is available. The engine produces 166 horsepower and 161 lb-ft. of torque - a 10-horsepower increase and a broader torque curve compared to the 2006 CR-V. The power upgrade is attributable to a slight increase in compression ratio and enhanced valvetrain, intake and exhaust tuning. From a refinement standpoint, the Drive-by-Wire (DBW) throttle control works closely with the transmission for extremely smooth shift points and intuitive gear holding on hilly roads.

    The fully automatic Real Time 4WD system (available) enhances the CR-V's all-weather capabilities when driving in rain, snow, dirt roads and sandy conditions - without the significant weight, fuel economy and handling performance drawbacks of a conventional four-wheel-drive system. For 2007, enhancements have been made to the system for improved torque transfer to the rear wheels - making the CR-V even better in rain, snow and sand.

    Aluminum 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC 4-Cylinder Engine

    The 2007 Honda CR-V engine is a dual overhead cam (DOHC) all-aluminum, 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder design that uses 16 valves and a high-volume intake manifold. The engine produces 166 horsepower at 5800 rpm and torque is rated 161 lb-ft. at 4200 rpm. Primary enhancements for 2007 include a slightly higher compression ratio (9.7:1 from 9.6:1) along with optimized valve timing and higher flow rate intake and exhaust systems. The broadened torque output allows the 2007 CR-V to offer smooth and spirited performance in all types of driving conditions whether it is city, freeway and hilly terrain.

    A host of innovative features are designed to deliver a cutting-edge combination of performance, fuel efficiency, and low emissions. Most apparent is the i-VTEC "intelligent" valve-control system, a technology that combines VTC (Variable Timing Control) - which continuously adjusts camshaft phase - with Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) - which changes valve lift, timing, and duration. The combination of these two systems results in impressive horsepower and torque - with good fuel economy and low exhaust emissions. The engine redline begins at 6500 rpm.

    In keeping with Honda's proven commitment to the environment, the CR-V engine meets strict California Air Resource Board (CARB) Ultra Low Emission Vehicle-2 (LEV II ULEV) tailpipe emissions standards and Federal Tier 2-Bin 5 emission standards. Engine, fuel tank and catalytic converter enhancements help the 2007 CR-V lower evaporative emissions by 75 percent.

    Engine Block, Crankshaft & Oil Pan

    The 2.4-liter engine uses a two-piece, die-cast aluminum block and bearing cap design that helps maximize strength and rigidity while minimizing noise and vibration. The compact upper element features cast-in iron cylinder liners for outstanding durability and the lower element consists of a single-casting crankshaft carrier fitted with ferrous-carbon bearing-cap inserts that add to its overall structural rigidity. Each journal on the forged-steel crankshaft is micropolished to help reduce internal friction and improve durability. For those keeping score, the crankshaft rotates clockwise.

    Aluminum Cylinder Head

    The i-VTEC engine uses a compact, lightweight cylinder head made of pressure-cast aluminum alloy. Its 4-valve-per-cylinder design has double overhead camshafts activated by a silent chain drive to ensure extremely precise control of the cam phasing. The cam drive is maintenance-free throughout the life of the engine. The combustion chamber is designed with a relatively large "squish" area that promotes faster flame propagation on the ignition stroke. This results in more complete burning of the air-fuel mix and subsequently, low emissions.

    i-VTEC Valvetrain

    As a technology cornerstone, Honda's original VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) reaches a new plateau in i-VTEC form. This "intelligent" version of the highly effective VTEC package has Variable Timing Control (VTC), which provides for continuously variable phasing of the intake camshaft. The pairing of VTEC and VTC results in excellent drivability, including more horsepower and torque at lower rpm levels, along with enhanced fuel economy and significantly lower emissions.

    The i-VTEC system on the 2.4-liter DOHC employs two rocker arms with friction-reducing roller followers for each pair of intake valves, along with an intake cam that has separate lobes configured to optimize both low- and high-speed operation. Depending on engine load and rpm, an electronic controller determines which cam profile will be used and exactly how each intake will operate.

    At low revs, where low lift and shorter duration provide optimal operation, the timing of the two intakes is staggered and the lift asymmetrically skewed in favor of the primary valve. This helps to create a swirl effect within the combustion chamber that increases the efficiency of the burn process. At higher rpm, a hydraulically actuated spool valve causes a locking pin to engage the secondary rocker arm with the primary one, transitioning the secondary valve into a high-lift/long-duration mode that improves output on the top end.

    VTC allows the timing of the intake camshaft to be continuously varied throughout the engine's entire rpm range. Along with helping boost power, VTC also provides a more stable idle (allowing idle speed to be reduced) and reduced pumping losses by effectively creating an internal EGR effect at low and mid engine speeds, which is also supplemented by an EGR valve. The result is increased fuel economy and lowered NOx emissions. Operation of the VTC is electronically controlled and is determined by input from sensors that monitor rpm, timing, throttle opening, cam position and exhaust gases. Depending on conditions, VTC can vary the phasing of the intake cam (change its position relative to the crankshaft) by +/- 25 degrees. VTC activation is accomplished hydraulically via a spool valve that sends high-pressure oil to passages in the cam's drive sprocket.

    At idle, the timing is almost fully retarded to minimize valve overlap. In normal highway driving, the intake camshaft is advanced to provide overlap for EGR effect. With the throttle wide open, valve timing starts in an advanced condition at lower RPM and continuously changes to a retarded condition when redline is approached. This allows optimum cylinder scavenging and pumping efficiency and provides outstanding power and torque throughout the rpm range.

    Drive-by-Wire Throttle Control

    An electronic drive-by-wire system helps enhance the driving character of the CR-V from both a throttle pedal feel (good tip-in with direct response) and a transmission refinement perspective (less shift shock with short gear change intervals). With smart electronics connecting the throttle pedal to the throttle butterfly valve in the intake manifold, the engine response can be optimized to suit the driving conditions and to better match the driver's expectations. By eliminating the direct throttle cable connection to the engine, the ratio between pedal movement and throttle butterfly movement can be continuously optimized.

    The CR-V uses a DC motor to control the throttle butterfly position in the intake tract. To establish the current driving conditions, the system monitors pedal position, throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed and engine vacuum. This information is then used to define the throttle control sensitivity.

    The throttle system also works to enhance the 5-speed automatic transmission's ability to make shifts faster and smoother. By coordinating the throttle opening with the transmission's shifting functions, engine power can be precisely tailored to the needs of the transmission at every point during the shifting process. That means less shift shock and delay, no matter the driving situation.

    Torque Rod Engine Mount System

    New for the CR-V, a torque rod engine mount system further enhances the vehicle's quiet and vibration-free operation. Previous CR-V engine mounts that attached the engine and transmission to the subframe and body utilized the engine mounts in front of and behind the engine in a vertical orientation, to resist the rotational effect seen when the engine is started, or accelerated. The torque rod engine mount system replaces these two engine mounts with an upper torque rod connected to the body, and a rear lower torque rod connected to the subframe, resisting the engine's rotational torque inputs to the chassis in a longitudinal orientation, reducing inputs that cause idle vibration, and mid and high frequency engine noise during acceleration. The CR-V's engine mounts consist of a rubber side mount integrated with the upper torque rod, lower torque rod, and a transmission mount. The torque rods isolates engine vibrations with solid rubber dampers located at the attachment points to the engine, the body, and the subframe.

    Internal Balancer Shafts

    To improve smoothness throughout the rev range and help lower noise levels, the CR-V is fitted with an internal balancer unit. Consisting of a pair of chain-driven counter-rotating shafts located in the oil pan, the balancing system helps quell the inherent second-order harmonic vibrations that normally impact in-line 4-cylinder engines.

    Exhaust System

    A high-efficiency exhaust system and a high-density catalytic converter help the CR-V engine meet stringent LEV II-ULEV emissions certifications in California and Federal Tier 2 Bin 5. Exhaust gases pass through a low heat-mass/dual-wall stainless steel manifold as they now exit the "downstream" side of the engine via a new double-walled pipe that also helps limit heat loss. The combination of higher relative temperatures and a more direct path to the catalytic converter yields quicker light-off, which contributes to lower levels of hydrocarbon and NOx emissions.

    Maintenance Minder

    The CR-V's vehicle maintenance schedule is calculated by the Maintenance Minder system. The Maintenance Minder system automatically indicates when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) and minimizes the guesswork related to whether the vehicle is being used in standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. As calculated by the Maintenance Minder system, the CR-V has an engine tune-up interval of 100,000 miles or more. (See Interior section for more details on the Maintenance Minder display.)

    5-Speed Automatic Transmission

    The CR-V comes standard with an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission. The 5-speed automatic transmission uses a wide overall ratio that maximizes acceleration in gears one through four and optimizes fuel economy in its overdrive fifth gear. The computer controlled direct control transmission provides amazingly smooth shifts. The direct control coupled with gear ratios that are closely matched to the output of the engine help extract more power from the engine at just the right time to provide overall vehicle performance competitive to vehicles with 4-speed automatic transmissions and more horsepower.

    The 5-speed automatic transmission uses a variety of technologies to provide smoother shifting as well as reduced friction for enhanced efficiency. Those technologies include a low-friction clutch and a special super-thin torque converter. The thin torque converter results in a compact transmission unit. Other space-saving measures include a double-row idle gear and a tightly packaged second-gear clutch.

    To improve powertrain smoothness and reduce gear "hunting" on steep grades, the 5-speed automatic transmission is also equipped with a standard Grade Logic Control system. Using sensors that monitor throttle position, vehicle speed, and acceleration/deceleration and then comparing these inputs with a map stored in the transmission computer, the system is able to determine when the vehicle is on an incline and adjust the shift schedule for improved climbing power or downhill engine braking.

    To improve fuel economy while maintaining a high level of drivability, the 5-speed automatic transmission includes an active lockup torque converter. With the precise control afforded by a linear solenoid, the system expands the speed and throttle setting range in which lockup can be engaged (closely emulating the benefits of a manual transmission design).

    Real Time(TM) 4WD

    The CR-V's 4-wheel drive system is designed to best match the majority of driving situations that SUV's realistically encounter. The fully automatic Real Time 4WD system (available) enhances the CR-V's all-weather and light duty off-road capabilities when driving in rain, snow, dirt roads and sandy conditions - without the significant weight, fuel economy and handling performance drawbacks of a conventional four-wheel-drive system. For 2007, enhancements have been made to the system for improved performance by optimizing materials and construction, resulting in 20 percent more torque transfer to the rear wheels.

    The CR-V's Real Time 4WD system sends power only to the rear wheels when there is insufficient traction for the front-wheel-drive system. The system consists of the conventional front-wheel-drive system, a compact transfer case that distributes torque to a propeller shaft running the length of the vehicle, a dual-pump system with a multi-plate clutch, a cam unit mechanism, the rear differential, and left and right rear-wheel driveshafts.

    The core of the system is the dual-pump unit. It consists of two hydraulic pumps, one driven by the front wheels via the propeller shaft and one driven by the rear wheels via the rear differential. A hydraulically actuated, multi-plate clutch, similar to the clutches used in Honda automatic transmissions, connects the propeller shaft to the rear differential.

    When the CR-V is operating with the front and rear wheels turning at the same speed, for example on dry pavement, the front and rear hydraulic pumps operate at the same rate. Hydraulic fluid circulates between the two pumps; however, no pressure is generated. In effect, the fluid pressure created by the front pump is equalized by the rear pump.
    If the front wheels begin to turn faster than the rear wheels, as would be the case if they were spinning on snow or ice, the two hydraulic pumps would turn at a different rate and hydraulic pressure proportional to the difference in their speeds of rotation would be generated. The resulting hydraulic pressure opens a valve body and feeds pressure to the multi-plate clutch, which engages the front propeller shaft to the rear differential. The rear differential then feeds the drive torque to the right and left rear wheels.

    To provide a quick torque transfer response time for transparent 4-wheel drive operation to the driver, the multi-plate clutch is supplemented by a one-way ball cam unit mechanism. The cam unit mechanism consists of two plates separated by six ball cams (large bearings) that move within ramped grooves. When a slight difference in rotation speed exists between the rear wheels and front wheels when driving forward, the ball cams move within the ramped grooves and create pressure that instantly begins the engagement of the main clutch (prior to the build-up of sufficient hydraulic pressure). By engaging the main clutch at a sufficient force even before the hydraulic pressure is generated by the two hydraulic pumps, the driving torque is transferred without a hint of time lag.

    Overall system operation is completely automatic; no electronics or driver action is involved. The greater the degree of front-wheel slippage, the greater the amount of torque fed to the rear wheels. Real Time(TM) 4WD is also low maintenance.     2007 Honda CR-V -- Body

    The 2007 Honda CR-V follows a dynamic and emotional design theme that incorporates a sporty forward cabin and a sculpted lower body with modular and durable lower body trim. A new double grille and a side profile with an arched side window shape accent the CR-V's distinctive and upscale character.

    A major safety innovation includes the introduction of the Advanced Compatibility Engineering(TM) (ACE(TM)) Body Structure that builds on the CR-V's already class-leading reputation for safety performance. The ACE Body Structure is a key technology for the implementation of Honda's Safety for Everyone initiative that seeks to provide the highest levels of safety regardless of vehicle size or price.

    Design and Styling

    Easily distinguishable as an entirely new CR-V, the 2007 model embraces curves and fluid design over the upright and traditional two-box SUV shape. This upscale and advanced concept merges a powerful lower body with large diameter tires to a dynamic and emotional forward cabin. The double grille creates a strong first impression and SUV strength is further expressed by the modular lower body trim. The arched side window shape emphasizes a sporty look and the rear end design with full-length taillights conveys a unique 3-dimensional look.     The CR-V Enters a New Dimension

    Compared to its predecessor, the 2007 CR-V body is 3.7 inches shorter (largely due to the relocation of the spare tire) in overall length (177.9 inches), 1.4 inches wider in overall width (71.6 inches) and the 66.1-inch height is 0.1 inches shorter. Underneath, its 103.1-inch wheelbase is 0.2 inches shorter, the front track is 1.2 inches wider (61.6 inches) and the rear track is 0.8 inches wider (61.6 inches).

    CR-V Body Structure

    The CR-V has a completely new body structure that implements advanced construction technologies for enhanced safety, better rigidity, improved ride comfort and a quieter cabin. As such, the solid unit body of the CR-V was designed from the outset to define a new standard for torsional and bending rigidity in the entry crossover SUV segment, achieving a rigidity balance similar to a sedan for sedan-like handling performance.

    Even with enhanced collision safety construction and larger dimensions, the overall vehicle weight remains similar to previous models. This has been achieved by optimizing the framework layout and sectional shapes, streamlining the joint structures, and utilizing 58 percent high-grade, high-strength steel (+ 24 percent).

    The fundamentally rigid design along with components such as a rear floor cross member, rear damper gussets and increased rigidity for the rear opening increases bending rigidity by 84 percent.


    ACE Body Structure for Frontal Collision Compatibility and Energy Management

    Body construction now includes Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering(TM) (ACE(TM)) Body Structure that enhances frontal collision energy management through a network of load bearing structures in the front of the vehicle. This newly developed front-end frame structure (similar to the ACE Body Structures on the Civic and Odyssey) incorporates newly-shaped upper and lower frame members to significantly enhance energy dispersion in a frontal collision throughout more load bearing channels in the body. The ACE concept differs from traditional crash designs that guide a high percentage of collision force through a vehicle's two lower channels in a collision.

    The ACE design with its polygonal front structure helps reduce the potential for misalignment with the frame of the opposing vehicle. Taken together, these features are designed to increase compatibility between vehicles of different size categories for enhanced occupant protection in the event of a frontal collision.

    The ACE Body Structure is configured for high energy absorption. In the event of a frontal collision, the body structure with its front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to prevent structural penetration while distributing forces evenly through multiple major load bearing pathways - and away from the passenger compartment. For comparison, a conventional body structure generally concentrates the loads from a collision through two pathways running longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame.

    In the ACE Body Structure for example, frontal impact force can be distributed from the front of the vehicle through the side sill, floor frame and A-pillar in order to reduce the cabin deformation. The bottom line is that the ACE Body Structure enhances energy distribution during a collision because impact forces can be distributed through more of a vehicle's mass and away from the passenger compartment.

    Offset Rear Collision Design

    The new FMVSS 301 regulation for offset rear collisions is strengthened compared to the previous standard. This regulation begins its phase-in starting September 2006 and must be applied to all production vehicles after September 1, 2008. In the new requirements for the FMVSS 301, a 1,361 kg (3,000 lbs.) deformable barrier strikes 70% of the vehicle's width at 80km (50 mph). In contrast, the previous FMVSS 301 used a 1,814 kg (4,000 lbs.) flat rigid barrier that struck the full width of the vehicle center-to-center at 48km (30 mph). The new standard requires more body energy absorption than before.

    Door Construction

    For safety, all CR-V driver and passenger doors feature a side impact protection beam. For quality, the doors are built on a robust structure that provides a solid feel and sound when closing. The door latches are carefully engineered to latch securely with a light closing pressure, and to emit a quality sound. Sound insulation performance was enhanced by connecting the ends of a door-opening seal, doubling the door seals and adding a layer of sound absorption material. Additionally, the CR-V's front doors use the lower step-in height, the wider opening angle of the rear door from 67 to 80 degrees, and triple-stage stopper construction, for ease of ingress/egress in tight parking situations.

    Pedestrian Safety Design

    The CR-V takes the wellbeing of pedestrians into account in its safety engineering. Accordingly, engineers optimized certain structures in the front end of the vehicle to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research shows that these features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.

    Key pedestrian safety features include:

    * Hood designed to deform if contact is made with either an adult or a child pedestrian
    * Energy-absorbing fender mounts and supports located under the hood
    * Sufficient clearance between hood and hard engine parts
    * Deformable windshield wiper pivots

    Aerodynamics

    The CR-V manages airflow for an approximate 10 percent improvement in coefficient of drag (Cd). Items such as the A pillar, side mirrors, wiper layout, underfloor pans and strakes have all been designed to minimize air turbulence. These designs result in enhanced fuel economy and less wind noise. Other measures contributing to reduced wind noise levels include reducing the width of body seams, mounting glass flush with the surrounding body panels, and using double seals around all doors.

    Tailgate

    New for 2007, the CR-V features a lightweight and easy-to-open top-hinged tailgate that replaces the side-hinged tailgate design of previous models. The top-hinged design, which opens vertically, allows for universally-convenient cargo loading from the left or right sides of the vehicle - while also providing a canopy during cargo transfer. A convenient benefit, the canopy provides some protection from nasty weather and also functions as the ideal sunshade, such as when tailgating at the big game. From a cargo functionality standpoint, the 37.4-inch (950 mm) door opening height is taller by 1.8 inches (45 mm) and wider by 0.4 inches (10 mm) to 54.7 inches (1390 mm).

    Assisted by hydraulic dampers, special hinges allow the top section of the lightweight tailgate to rotate optimally for low open and close loads while also creating an ergonomically more convenient lift-off point (lower to the ground) and a shut-down point (higher from the ground). When open, the packaging helps maintain a lower overall door opening height, making the CR-V practical in garages with low hanging ceilings. Overall, the CR-V tailgate provides convenient and user-friendly one-step operation in the real world where juggling grocery bags, backpacks, keys, bikes, gold bricks and other miscellany are standard operating procedure.

    Previously mounted on the tailgate, the spare tire now resides inside the vehicle under the cargo floor. Moving the spare tire inside also helps reduce the overall length of the vehicle by 3.1 inches, helping the CR-V fit better into a short garage space.

    Tight Tolerances

    Honda vehicles have long been synonymous with outstanding fit and finish. This attention to detail is evident in the increased body panel fit accuracy that produces significant reductions in the sizes of gaps between body panels and interior components. The CR-V features what is known as a "zero" gap for the front and rear bumpers, or less than a single millimeter. This gives the bumpers a more integrated appearance, yet keeps collision costs to a minimum by isolating various body components so fewer components require replacing in the event of an accident.

    Noise and Vibration Dampening

    The CR-V achieves levels of quietness during acceleration and cruising in a league similar to luxury SUVs. This is due in part to the high levels of rigidity of the CR-V platform and the application of advanced noise and vibration absorption materials. Extensive lightweight sound absorption materials have been applied to the floor, firewall, cargo area, and roof along with additional sound insulation materials for side pillars. Traditional use of melt sheets (sheets that dampen noise and vibration) are also used. Additionally, the doors have two seals for reduced noise intrusion.

    Exterior Lighting

    The CR-V headlamp design uses sharp and wide lamps for front-of-vehicle illumination. The lamp assemblies feature a clear one piece outer lens that wraps around the vehicle's front corners with the inboard turn signals housed inside. The round outboard halogen lamp functions for low and high beam illumination, and also provides the newly added daytime running lamps. The halogen headlights offer class-leading performance, casting a beam wide and far, while also providing brighter illumination of objects in closer proximity.

    The tall rear taillights envelope the D-pillar and feature a reflective inner-cube design as the background pattern during illumination. The lenses are solid red for brake and running lights, with a large clear lens for the turn signal lights (amber illumination). A clear back-up-lamp provides illumination when in reverse.

    The CR-V is equipped with a six-layer resin fuel tank that offers relatively lower weight, increased capacity, and reduced emissions. Capacity is 15.3 gallons (58.0 liters). The CR-V also incorporates a return-less fuel supply system that helps reduce vapor generation.

    MacPherson Strut Front Suspension

    The MacPherson strut front suspension incorporates new geometry with a high caster angle, and inversely wound springs for straight line stability, along with improved toe-control dynamics for sharp and responsive steering. To improve steering rigidity, and reduce friction, the steering gear box was mounted lower. Significant changes to steering angles, bushings, material rigidity, and spring and shock tuning result in amazingly linear suspension movement at the upper limit of vehicle dynamics and flatter cornering. When cornering, the inner wheel remains closer to perpendicular (relative to the ground plane) throughout a greater range of travel, which improves tire adhesion. To improve ride comfort, the compliance angle on the lower control arm was optimized to transmit less harshness. Further enhancements include reduced center offset with the wheel to minimize the potential for torque steer and shimmy (i.e. the tires' ability to transmit pavement irregularities into the suspension)
    The front suspension is a specially designed and tuned for compact packaging, supple ride comfort and the long wheel travel and ruggedness necessary to meet harsh roads. The geometry has been optimized with both a high caster angle and "trail," to provide sharp on-center response and stability.

    Springs, Dampers and Stabilizer Bars

    The tuning of the suspension is designed to minimize front-end dive during braking and squat under acceleration, as well as reduced body roll when cornering. The spring rates, combined with precise damper tuning, provide a good balance between the CR-V's fun-to-drive character and everyday ride comfort.

    As with every vehicle that utilizes a strut suspension design, the strut bears the load of the weight of the vehicle. Drive forces during the suspension's compression stage can sometimes influence steering precision feel because as the springs compress, they exert torsional force in the opposite direction on the steering mechanism and sometimes make the car pull to the side. To neutralize this effect, Honda engineers applied inversely wound (wound in the opposite direction) coil springs to the front struts. Because the two front springs compress in opposite directions, the torsional force they produce cancels each other out, minimizing their effect on steering feel.

    Damper construction is a progressive valve design that significantly contributes to a smooth ride and precise handling characteristics. These gas-pressure dampers use a stacked disc-valve arrangement that yields easily and progressively to high-velocity damper piston movement, such as those created by bumps and road impacts; however, the same velocity-sensitive valves present more resistance to the small, low-velocity movement associated with body transient motion at high speed.

    The CR-V has front and rear stabilizer bars to reduce body roll during cornering. The diameter of the solid front stabilizer bar measures 20 mm. The solid rear stabilizer bar measures 19 mm.

    Steering System

    The variable speed sensitive rack-and-pinion power steering system features quick gear ratios for sharp and rapid transitions with a quick and light response. Previously a high-mounted steering box setup, the entire steering system is located lower in the vehicle with short length tie-rods to improve input geometry (i.e. more direct) into the front suspension. A speed sensitive hydraulic power steering system provides more power boost at low speeds for easier maneuvering and less boost at higher speeds for a direct steering feel and improved economy. All models have a tilt and telescope steering wheel column. The minimum turning diameter is 37.8 feet, curb-to-curb.

    Braking System with Advanced Logic 4-Channel ABS and Brake Assist

    The CR-V is equipped with a 4-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Stopping power is routed through robust ventilated front disc brakes and solid rear disc brakes. The 4-channel ABS with EBD independently modulates braking power at each wheel, as opposed to the more common 3-channel system that modulates the front wheels independently and the rear wheels with relatively equal braking force. The new 4-channel capability allows the rear wheels to react independently while cornering, representing a significant enhancement to the ABS system's ability to influence vehicle stability and safety.

    Electronic Brake Distribution proportions brake power to the rear wheels based on algorithms that determine vehicle weight distribution. Further additions to the braking system include a new ABS control module (that applies the new 4-channel features) and a relatively large 10.5-inch power brake booster that improves pedal feel. Higher pedal rigidity with a decreased pedal stroke provides a more immediate braking response. Bottom line, the CR-V stops with greater authority and added control.

    A function of the VSA system, the CR-V can also recognize emergency braking situations and enhance braking assist when needed - a function called Brake Assist. This feature can be especially helpful when the driver is unable to press the brake strongly. When the driver uses the brakes in a panic stop fashion, a pressure sensor recognizes braking system operation beyond a specific value for pedal stroke and speed. Then, the VSA modulator pump assists braking pressure to increase braking force and shorten the braking distance.

    For 2007, the ventilated front disc brakes are 11.7 inches and the solid rear disc brakes are 12.0 inches. The front disc thickness equals 1.1 inches (28mm) and the rear disc thickness equals 0.35 inch (9mm).

    Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)

    For enhanced control during acceleration, cornering, and sudden collision-avoidance maneuvers, the CR-V is equipped with a 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system that works in conjunction with the drive-by-wire throttle and ABS systems. VSA enhances vehicle stability by applying brake force to each of the four disc brakes independently while also managing the throttle and ignition systems.

    An additional benefit is the limited-slip differential effect the system provides for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. Analyzing data that is constantly received from seven sensors monitoring speed, steering input lateral G forces, and yaw rate, the VSA system compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. If the actual response is outside a predicted response range, VSA automatically intervenes with an appropriate corrective action. In the case of oversteer, VSA applies braking to the outside front and rear wheels to counter the unintended yawing effect. If understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside front and rear wheels and reduces engine power to help bring the car back onto the driver's intended course.

    The VSA system in the CR-V has been carefully calibrated to add handling stability and predictability with minimal intrusion to the driving experience. Its operation is designed to be transparent, so drivers may not even notice when VSA is working. Whenever the system is actively enhancing the vehicle's stability, an indicator light flashes on the instrument panel. In addition, VSA's stability enhancement and traction control can be turned off with a cockpit switch while still leaving the ABS fully functional.

    Wheels and Tires

    The 2007 CR-V rides on 17-inch, five-bolt steel wheels as standard equipment on LX models, and exclusive alloy wheels are standard equipment on EX and EX-L models. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard equipment. The tire size is 225/65R17, representing a larger tire size that emphasizes a powerful stance.

    Tire Pressure Monitoring System

    A direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) alerts the driver when it detects that tire pressure in one or more tires drops significantly below the recommended pressure. A series of four sensors (one per tire) captures and relays information to the CR-V's ECU. If the system detects that tire pressure is significantly low, a low tire pressure indicator (located in the instrument panel meter cluster) will illuminate.

    Towing Information

    Enhanced Design with Improved Style and Premium Features

    The increased body width allows the seats to be wider and more supportive, and a newly-designed folding center tray table not only provides the prerequisite beverage holders and sub-tray, but EX and above models also provide an additional 12V power outlet and auxiliary audio jack. CR-V models outfitted with a leather interior (EX-L) now provide a spacious multi-function center console. On EX and above models, a dual-deck cargo shelf provides additional storage options in the cargo area while providing enough clearance underneath for grocery bags or items such as a folded stroller. A sliding underseat storage bin exists under the front passenger seat.

    The latest generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is available on the CR-V EX-L trim level and features a 6.5-inch display whose opening and closing motion is operated by an electric motor for access to the internal single-disc CD player and a digital audio card reader that can play MP3 and WMA files from CompactFlash(R) cards (an external 6-disc CD changer is housed in the center console). The navigation system features more than 6 million points of interest and the voice recognition is capable of recognizing and inputting numbers, street names and cities, along with controlling the audio system.

    For 2007, all audio systems are more powerful with at least 160 watts. As much as 270 Watts and seven speakers including a subwoofer are available on the EX-L with Navigation. Auxiliary audio input jacks are standard equipment on all trim levels, allowing for portable music device playback through the CR-V's speakers. XM(R) Satellite Radio is standard on the EX-L. The LX trim level has a four-speaker 160-watt audio system with a single-disc CD player.     Ease of Vehicle Entry and Exit

    As a benefit from the introduction of the all-new CR-V platform, the side sill step-in height is lower by 1.3 inches (32 mm) so that ingress and egress feels more sedan-like. The lower side sill has larger door openings lower to the ground, so getting in and out of the CR-V is easy and natural. In addition, the seat cushion's height approximates the hip height of an average height adult, so passengers do not have to "climb" in and out of the seats. Door openings feature a durable, non-skid plastic surface that provides a sure footing for standing when accessing the roof. Additionally, the tailgate has a low load-in height to make placing objects in the cargo area a convenient process.

    Instrument Panel Design and Meters

    The instrument panel meters features efficient and modern architecture with futuristic meter designs set against white and blue backlit gauges. The odometer readout (below the speedometer face) also functions as an extensive information display that shows outside temperature, vehicle mileage and trip mileage, and average fuel economy, and is operated via an illumination controller on the gauge. The information display also shows Maintenance Minder service-related items based on vehicle usage.

    The CR-V instrumentation includes the following:

    Maintenance Minder Display

    The Maintenance Minder system automatically indicates in the information display when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) and minimizes the guesswork related to whether the vehicle is being used in standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. Display items include when to change the engine oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, rear differential oil, spark plugs, coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires.

    Audio Systems

    The 2007 Honda CR-V audio systems provide more power and features across the board with added features and a greater diversity of options. Three unique audio systems exist and each provides intuitive contols and knobs designed to make operation quick and convenient. Every system provides an auxiliary input jack for external audio sources such as an MP3 player. Additional premium features include Speed-sensitive Volume Control (SVC) that can adjust the volume level higher or lower to best match the background noise associated with elevated speeds (user selectable with three levels). Available factory options include a Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition and Rearview Camera.

    CR-V LX
    The CR-V LX includes an AM/FM radio, CD player with MP3/WMA capability, 160-watt power output and four speakers.

    CR-V EX and EX-L
    The CR-V EX and EX-L include an AM/FM radio, built-in 6-disc CD changer with MP3/WMA playback, CD/MP3 text display, 160-Watt power output, six speakers (including two dashboard tweeters) and steering wheel-mounted audio controls (volume and channel preset).

    CR-V EX-L with Navigation
    The CR-V EX-L with Navigation audio system is integrated into the navigation unit display and controls and includes an AM/FM radio, XM Satellite Radio tuner, 270-Watt power output, 7-speakers including two dash mounted tweeters and subwoofer (located under the front passenger seat), CD/MP3 text display, internal single disc CD player with MP3/WMA playback, external 6-disc CD changer (located in the center console), and a digital audio card reader (PC card adapter required).

    Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition and Rearview Camera

    The latest generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is available as a factory option on CR-V EX-L models and features a 6.5-inch motorized display that opens and closes for access to the internal CD player slot and a digital audio card reader. The digital audio card reader can play MP3 and WMA files from SD, CompactFlash(TM), and Flash ATA memory cards (PCM adapter required for all cards). The navigation system features more than 7 million points of interest. The voice recognition, capable of more than 650 system commands, can also recognize any street name and city name in the extensive nationwide database.

    A rearview camera is standard equipment and is activated whenever the vehicle is in reverse. The color camera is located near the rear license plate and has a wide-angle lens.

    Honda navigation systems have long been recognized for their simple, intuitive operation and extensive on-board database. When navigating freeways, a split screen design enhances on-screen information with a "map view" and "3-D" route visualization of freeways simultaneously- which helps make navigation information easier to understand. The system is integrated with the car's audio system, so driving instructions can be heard over the speaker system, and the voice recognition feature adds a hands-free realm of control to the navigation system.

    The Honda Satellite-Linked DVD Navigation System uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's DVD-based mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features.

    The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

    Turn-by-turn voice guidance is user selectable in either male or female voice and can be turned off at any time. Destination memory recalls current trip addresses and previous destinations; and calendar and calculator with English to metric number converter is standard. The navigation system can be controlled by the driver through either the voice recognition system, the touch screen display, or by the joystick on the instrument panel. The voice recognition system works when the "talk" button, located on the steering wheel, is depressed. When spoken to, the system recognizes commands such as "find nearest gas station," or "find nearest ATM" and can also recognize street and city names.

    The 6.5-inch LCD display is a touch screen (TFT, resistive film) that allows the driver or front passenger to choose menu options or type a word (i.e. address, business name, place, etc.) through a touch-sensitive keypad. The keypad can be set to alphabetical or a QWERTY typewriter-style layout. Alternatively, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word. A matte finish is used on the display to reduce glare and smudging. When disc loading is selected for the CD player, the motorized screen conveniently tilts down to allow access to the CD loader located behind the screen.

    For data storage, the system uses a single 8 GB DVD that contains information for the entire United States. Future updates to the navigation system can be made by installing an updated DVD (available by via Honda's OwnerLink on-line or by calling a toll free number in the owner's manual).

    Three-Spoke Steering Wheel with Tilt and Telescope Column

    The three-spoke steering wheel on the CR-V matches the vehicle's sporty character with a smaller diameter (15 inches) that also accents the vehicle's quicker steering ratio. All models include manual tilt and telescope steering wheel adjustments to better accommodate drivers of various sizes. All trim levels include cruise control buttons on the right side of the steering wheel for set, accelerate, decelerate and cancel. CR-V EX and EX-L models include audio controls on the left side of the steering wheel for volume and channel selection. CR-V's equipped with the available navigation system also have buttons on the steering wheel for the input of voice commands. The CR-V EX-L steering wheel is leather-wrapped (along with the shifter lever).

    Reclining Front Bucket Seats with Adjustable Head Restraints

    The CR-V front seats have been completely redesigned with wider (+0.8 inches) and more supportive seat construction thanks to progressively tuned foam bolsters. The driving position has been optimized in relation to the steering wheel and vehicle controls, and folding armrests are installed on the inboard portions of the seat. An innovative front seat active head restraint system enhances the seat's ability to minimize the potential for a neck injury in the event of a rear collision (see Active Head Restraints in Interior Safety section).

    Both front seats manually recline and move forward and back. The driver's seat features a manual height adjustment control with 1.6 inches total of up and down travel. A ratchet-style lever on the left side of the seat makes adjusting the height easy - just pull up or push down to move the seat in increments.

    Seat construction integrates several significant technologies. High strength steel now comprises the majority of the seats internal steel framework. Composite components are used in the base and the seatback to minimize weight and proactively influence seat cushion feedback. The foam cushions employ various densities in the bolsters compared to other areas in the seat to provide the right level of comfort (softness) and support (firmness) in all the right places.

    60/40 Split Rear Sliding Fold and Tumble Seats

    The 60/40 Split Rear Seats provide generous seating surfaces that are both comfortable and functional. The standard cargo volume behind the second row (seats upright) measures 35.7 cubic feet. To increase storage space, the seats can be folded down and tumbled forward to more than double the cargo area storage space and accommodate long, bulky items like a mountain bike or large boxes. In this cargo configuration, the CR-V offers a total of 72.9 cubic feet of storage behind the front seats, more than enough for two 26-inch mountain bikes (with front wheels attached).

    Designed for practicality and convenience, the fold and tumble seat design allows for a flat cargo floor. When folded, the three head restraints can remain in the seat backs (no removal necessary). Maximum cargo length equals about 51 inches and the maximum width ranges between approximately 39 inches (at wheel wells) to 54 inches (rear cargo area side panels). The rear seats slide forward and backward to allow for the optimization of the cargo area and second row passenger legroom. A new feature for 2007, the seatbacks have a 40/20/40 split design to allow for center (or side) pass-through of long items.

    Storage Areas and Dual-Deck Cargo Shelf

    Convenient storage areas are easily accessible throughout the interior with approximately 20 individual storage areas ranging from an upper and lower glove box to eight individual beverage holders to an underseat storage bin. New for 2007, a center console replaces the retractable center tray table on the CR-V EX-L trim level. Each front door has a utility box compartment built into the padded armrest along with bottle holders. The lockable 6.3-liter lower glove box is illuminated, and the upper glove box enhances the previous concept of the open tray storage by using a flip-down cover. Up front, there are two cupholders in the center console. In the rear seat area, the center armrest folds down to reveal dual cupholders.

    On CR-V EX and EX-L models, a new dual deck cargo shelf system allows for two levels of storage in the rear cargo area. The shelf provides 13 inches (330 mm) of vertical space underneath - enough room for a collapsed stroller or similar item - while still retaining a convenient area to place smaller items on top (up to 20 pounds). The shelf is hinged at the front for easy access to items underneath. The cargo shelf can also be placed on the floor for conventional cargo area space utilization.

    Retractable Center Tray Table

    CR-V LX and EX trim levels provide a retractable center tray table with two beverage holders and a storage tray. Solid and sturdy, the retractable center tray table folds down to allow center pass-through between the first and second rows. New for 2007, the CR-V EX retractable center tray adds a 12V DC accessory outlet and an MP3/auxiliary audio input jack. The new features allow for more convenient integration of MP3 players and also provide a convenient place to recharge electronic devices. (The CR-V LX has an audio input jack on the instrument panel below the single-DIN radio.)

    Center Console (EX-L)

    New for 2007, a center console with two beverage holders is standard on the CR-V EX-L. As a premium feature, the center console enhances the interior's appearance while adding two supplemental enclosed storage areas - a small container on the front and a larger one on the rear. The larger container can store various items such as cell phones and MP3 players. It has a sliding panel for quick and easy access, and contains a 12V DC accessory outlet and an MP3/auxiliary audio input jack. On models equipped with the available Honda Navigation System, the front portion of the console contains the 6 CD changer.

    Climate Control

    All CR-V trim levels provide air conditioning as standard equipment. The manual climate controls are mounted centrally on the instrument panel for easy accessibility and utilize large, glove-friendly rotary knobs for temperature settings and fan control (12-speeds). A new feature for 2007 is the addition of push button selection for directing air through the various vents inside the vehicle, i.e. defrost, heater, split level, etc.

    The new controls add a touch of class and simplify mode selection. A micron air-filtration system is also standard. From a mechanical standpoint, the climate control system is designed to be efficient and lightweight, utilizing a high capacity condenser with an integrated receiver/drier to route liquid refrigerant through a sub-cooling condenser after cycling through the main condenser - thus increasing efficiency.

    Interior Lighting and Progressive Illumination

    The progressive self-illuminating gauge package gives the CR-V a "welcoming" feel. When the driver door is first opened, the instrument lighting comes to life, and then brightens progressively to 100 percent when the ignition is switched on. The illuminated instrument needles and enunciator lights then come alive, indicating that the CR-V is ready to go. At the end of the drive, the instrument lighting dims progressively.

    Interior switches are illuminated to make them easy to locate at night, including those on all four doors and the steering wheel. The CR-V has blue low-level ambient lighting in the ceiling that illuminates the front center console area. All four doors have courtesy lights that are illuminated when the doors are open.

    Power Windows and Power Door and Tailgate Locks

    Power windows and power door and tailgate locks are standard equipment. The driver's window has convenient auto up and down operation and the passenger window has an auto up feature. Power door locks can be customized to auto-lock when the vehicle is put in drive or when the vehicle exceeds 9 mph (the auto lock functionality is turned off by default from the factory). User-selectable childproof door locks are standard on the rear doors.

    Keyless Entry System

    Keyless entry is standard equipment. The CR-V uses Honda's wave key design that has an integrated transmitter in the key handle with lock, unlock and panic buttons. The key can also raise and lower the windows.

    Engine Immobilizer

    Complementing the keyless entry system is a standard engine-immobilizer system. A special electronically coded key prevents the car from being started-even if a mechanical duplicate of the key is used. A transponder, built into the key, signals the immobilizer control unit that the key is genuine. If the car is hot-wired, or an unauthorized key is used, the engine will not start.

    12V DC Accessory Outlets

    The CR-V LX provides two 12V DC accessory outlets; one is located on the instrument panel's center stack and the other is located in the cargo area.. The CR-V EX and EX-L add an additional accessory outlet on either the retractable center table or inside the center console.

    U.V. Resistant Glass and Available Privacy Glass

    The CR-V features glass that filters Ultra Violet (U.V.) light. This style of glass results in less interior fade over time, lower cabin temperatures on hot days and more efficient interior cooling. In addition to U.V. resistance, the EX and EX-L trim levels feature deep-tinted privacy glass on the five most rearward windows.

    Safety Overview

    Honda's mission for the CR-V is to provide an extraordinarily high level of safety that meets and exceeds all current regulations and standards. These goals embrace Honda's fundamental safety concept called "Safety for Everyone."

    All new 2007 model year vehicles are required to meet the latest federal crash-performance regulations known as FMVSS 208 (frontal) and FMVSS 301 (rear) that phase in from September 2006.

    Above and beyond these are key safety evaluation tests from NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which are often referenced by customers but not required by law. For the CR-V, the engineering target was 5 Stars for the NHTSA tests and Good ratings for all IIHS tests - the best results possible.

    This includes voluntary improvements in the IIHS ratings test called SICE, which limits the intrusiveness if hit by an SUV in a side collision. Finally, the CR-V adopts pedestrian head protection measures that are above and beyond NHTSA standards, which currently do not regulate this safety issue.

    Advanced Dual Stage, Dual Threshold Front Driver's and Front Passenger's Airbags

    The CR-V is equipped with dual-stage, dual-threshold supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags for the driver and front passenger. These airbags are designed to minimize the potential for airbag injury while providing head and chest protection for the occupants in the event of a frontal collision. This front airbag system features front passenger seat weight sensors and a driver seat position sensor designed to further enhance occupant protection.

    The CR-V's front airbags can deploy at one of two rates. Deployment of the driver's front airbag takes into account the severity of the crash, whether or not the driver's seat belt is fastened and the position of the driver's seat. During a lower speed collision, the airbag inflators are triggered in sequence, resulting in overall airbag deployment with less initial force. The same sequence is also utilized regardless of collision speed if the driver's seat is close to the full forward position.

    During a higher speed collision, if the driver's seat is far from the full frontal position, both inflators operate simultaneously for full, immediate inflation. Airbag deployment on the front passenger's airbag is regulated by crash severity, seatbelt usage as well as the weight of the occupant. Sensors under the seat gauge occupant weight and if the total weight on the passenger seat is less than the NHTSA-specified MVSS specifications, the airbag system will not deploy, minimizing the potential for injury to children. Similar to what is available on the driver's side, the airbags are deployed at the speed appropriate to the speed and severity of the collision - slower for lower speed collisions, more quickly for higher speeds.

    The driver's airbag is located in the steering wheel hub and the passenger's airbag is located on top of the dashboard. As in all Honda vehicles, the front passenger's airbag is designed to deploy upward toward the windshield and then back toward the occupant. This provides a large cushion to help protect the front passenger while reducing the likelihood of injury resulting from airbag deployment.

    Driver's Front Side Airbag and Front Passenger's Side Airbag with Occupant Position Detection System
    Every CR-V is equipped with seat-mounted front side airbags in the outboard sections of the backrests to help safeguard the driver and front passenger from side-impact injury. An innovative occupant position detection system is used to assure that the passenger's side airbag has a clear path for deployment. In the event a child (or a small-statured adult) leans into the deployment path of the side airbag, a seven-segment "antenna" system built within the backrest signals this condition to an electronic control unit (ECU) also located within the seat. The ECU then deactivates the side air bag from functioning and triggers a "SIDE AIRBAG OFF" indicator light in the instrument cluster. After the front occupant returns to a normal seating position, the side air bag module automatically resumes full-functional status.

    Side Curtain Airbags

    Both rows of occupants are protected by Honda's Side Curtain Airbag with Rollover Sensor system, which is standard equipment on all CR-V models. The side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the roof in the event of a sufficient side impact, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll rate sensor and multiple G sensors determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly.

    Like the other airbag systems in the CR-V, the side curtain system utilizes multiple sensors to determine the most appropriate timing of deployment of the airbags in the event of a rollover. To provide the optimal level of protection for CR-V occupants, extensive testing was performed to determine the most appropriate timing of deployment in the event of a rollover. The system uses algorithms to continually evaluate the situation and determines whether a rollover is imminent. The system responds to many types of rollover "events" drivers could potentially encounter including the "curb trip rollover" which as its name suggests, results when one side of the vehicle hits a curb or like object; the "soil trip rollover" which can result when one side of the vehicles suddenly comes into contact with a different surface type, often involving a slight elevation change; and the "screw rollover." This type of rollover is usually the steepest and fastest of the rollovers whereby the vehicle comes upon a sharp angle such as an embankment.

    The roll rate sensor and multiple G sensors determine the "scenario" and calculate the angle of roll and the speed of the vehicle in order to deploy the airbags at the correct stage for optimum protection. In the case of a rollover, the side curtain airbags on both sides of the vehicle will deploy. The airbags maintain full inflation for approximately three seconds after inflation to allow for the increased time duration of a rollover accident. However, in the event of a sufficient side impact that does not result in a rollover, only the airbags on the impacted side of the vehicle will deploy.

    Active Front Seat Head Restraints

    An innovative front seat active head restraint system is used that enhances the seat's ability to minimize the potential for neck injury from rear end collisions. The ability to manage rear collision forces to be relatively equal on the head, neck and spine is a key component to minimizing injuries. In the event of a rear collision, a person's body would be pushed against the seatback. The pressure from the seatback is transmitted mechanically from the lumbar plate via links that push the head restraint upward and forward to comparatively equalize the forces acting on the head, neck and spine at the same time as the collision.

    Front Seatbelts with Pretensioners and Load Limiters

    Both front seat belts have seat belt pretensioners and load limiters that work together to help protect the driver and front passenger in a collision. The components work automatically in a 1-2 sequence. In the first few milliseconds of a collision, the pretensioners automatically tighten the front seat belts. Research has shown that seat belts that are snugly secured around the occupants provide better protection. If the deceleration forces rise above a predetermined threshold, the load limiter releases a small length of seatbelt webbing to reduce the pressure on the occupant in a controlled manner. This helps reduce the injuries that seatbelts can cause in a severe high-speed collision.

    LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren)

    The 2007 CR-V includes a LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child-seat mounting system for all rear seat positions, allowing two outboard child seats to be installed or one center child seat to be installed. LATCH features built-in lower anchors and ready-to-use tether attachment points that allow compatible child safety seats to be installed without using the vehicle's seat belt system. Additionally, the LATCH system simplifies child seat installation when an owner installs a LATCH-compatible child seat.

    POSITIONING

    ‘Car-like’ is a bit of a buzz word in the SUV category at the moment. It seems every manufacturer under the sun is launching a 4x4 vehicle with improved on-road presence. The reality is that customers are demanding better driving dynamics from SUVs and there’s been a shift in buying trends – away from rugged off-road performance and towards more-sophisticated, flexible, ‘car-like’ 4x4s.

    The good news for Honda is we’ve always had a ‘king of the road’ in this market. The CR-V has always been a practical, fine-handling family car – rather than a large, clumsy off-roader. It’s won numerous ‘school run’ group tests in magazines, and has been applauded for its impeccable road manners compared to the competition.

    The good news for customers is that because we were already in such a strong on-road position with CR-V, we were able to make the latest generation of the car even more like a saloon in terms of cornering ability, equipment levels and styling. Honda designers and engineers used D-sector cars as benchmarks – not other 4x4s. That means handling, ride and specification on the new CR-V are comparable with cars like the Accord Tourer and the Volkswagen Passat.

    Never mind the D-sector: In the face of ‘Anti 4x4’ campaigns and ‘Chelsea tractor’ claims, Honda has built a petrol-engined SUV with CO2 emissions lower than a Mini Cooper!* And, just like in the handling and equipment stakes, fuel economy is on a par with several estate cars. The CR-V equipped with our 2.2 diesel engine – the acclaimed, cleaner, quieter i-CTDi engine no less – tells a similar story: low emissions, high mpg.

    BACKGROUND

    Launched at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show, the original Honda CR-V was one of the first of the modern generation of ‘soft roaders’ and became a benchmark for this fast-growing segment.

    Sales began in Europe in 1997 and the CR-V quickly became a firm favourite with buyers. It was so successful in fact, that production of European models was soon transferred to Honda’s Swindon plant.

    Launched in early 2002, the second generation CR-V built on its predecessor’s success, retaining the popular 4x4 styling and the ‘on demand’ Dual Pump 4WD transmission. Enviable economy was achieved through the adoption of Honda’s 2.0-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, while a new body structure delivered greater interior space as well as setting new class standards in occupant and pedestrian safety.

    The CR-V has consistently been one of the best-selling petrol-engined SUVs in the UK, but in 2005 it received a further sales boost with the introduction of Honda’s much acclaimed i-CTDi diesel engine. Fresh new styling front and rear, interior improvements and equipment enhancement coincided with the introduction of the new engine.

    The CR-V is a truly global product for Honda. Since 1996, nearly 2.5 million CR-Vs have been sold in 160 countries – more countries than any other Honda automotive product. European sales in 2005 were 59,000 out of a total 334,000 worldwide. In the UK in 2005, Honda sold 16,700 CRVs.

    DRIVING DYNAMICS

    Aims
    Many people who choose to drive an SUV, do so because they prefer the high driving position – it often gives a feeling of safety and confidence. Meanwhile, some drivers opt for a car in this category because they enjoy the assurance of four-wheel drive.

    But if, primarily, you’re using an SUV on the road, is there a reason why that vehicle can’t offer all of the above, and still drive like a ‘normal’ car? It’s a question we at Honda asked ourselves. Too many SUVs are soggy and uninvolving. The ride is often wallowy and steering sometimes feels indirect. Couldn’t the new CR-V offer a higher driving position, the security of four-wheel drive, the practicality of an SUV and the driving characteristics of a saloon car? Err… well, yes it could.

    The second generation CR-V was already pretty good on the road, but in developing the latest car, Honda has concentrated on increasing cornering agility, creating saloon-like ride quality and improving stability – all without compromising the car’s load space and practicality.

    Centre of gravity
    To deliver a flatter ride, with greater stability, the centre of gravity has been lowered by 35mm. The measures adopted included lower engine mountings, the repositioning of the spare wheel beneath the rear floor, and the reduced weight of certain items such as the tailgate and bonnet.

    Front suspension
    The front suspension is specially designed and tuned for compact packaging, supple ride comfort and long wheel travel for harsh roads.

    MacPherson struts are employed again at the front, but with new geometry, including a high caster angle ‘trail’, to provide sharp, on-centre response and stability.

    Improved toe-control dynamics help deliver sharp and responsive steering. And to improve steering rigidity and reduce friction, the steering gear unit is mounted lower.

    Suspension springs can, under compression, exert torsional forces and in doing so influence steering precision feel. On the CR-V, inversely wound springs (wound in the opposite direction to one another) effectively cancel each other out and neutralise this.

    Significant changes to steering angles, bushes, material rigidity and spring and damper tuning give a far more linear suspension movement at the limit of compression for flatter cornering. The inner wheel remains closer to the perpendicular throughout a greater range of travel, improving tyre adhesion.

    To improve ride comfort, the compliance angle on the lower control arm has been optimised to transmit less harshness. Further enhancements include reduced centre offset with the wheel to minimise the potential for torque steer.


    Front suspension revisions:
    • Increased suspension stroke for greater comfort
    • A larger front to rear compliance bush for improved shimmy and harshness characteristics
    • An increased caster angle and caster trail, and higher friction damper bearings improve responses to steering input, on-centre feel and directional stability
    • Optimised king pin layout enhances steering feel and linearity
    • Increased anti-dive angle for greater braking stability
    • Asymmetrical coil springs improve steering quality

    Rear suspension
    A super-compact rear suspension design minimises damper intrusion into the cabin, thus maximising luggage space.

    The nature of the reactive link design means that, under braking, forces are transmitted through the suspension structure, causing the rear mounted toe control arm – located at 90 degrees to the force – to flex backwards.

    The suspension assembly is pushed rearwards, which affects the bushes that fix the lower wishbone to the chassis. They move in a diagonal direction, which pulls the trailing arm into a toe-in direction.

    The rear dampers feature a progressive valve design that gives both a smooth ride and precise handling characteristics. These units use valves that are less resistant to high speed damper piston movement (such as those created by bumps and road impacts when the car is at low speeds) and provide more resistance to the small, low-speed movements when the vehicle is at high speeds.

    Rear suspension revisions:
    • A new cast aluminium knuckle reduces unsprung weight for improved ride comfort
    • Anti-roll bar diameter increased from 18 to 19mm further improves stability
    • A larger diameter lower arm compliance bushing for improved harshness characteristics
    • A new integrated hub and bearing unit offers greater lateral rigidity and as a result improves rear end tracking and damps down yaw changes
    • Greater responsiveness from repositioned trailing arm and upper arm mounting points
    • Increased anti-lift angle for greater braking stability

    REAL TIME 4WD SYSTEM

    The new CR-V continues to offer Honda’s efficient and convenient Real Time 4WD system which only comes into operation when required. It does so automatically, without any extra driver input. Real Time 4WD enables the CR-V to cope with light off-road driving – over dirt roads or slippery grass fields for example – while providing greater on-road security in slippery conditions.

    In the latest system, uprated clutches, high tensile steel gears and a stronger casing allow 20 per cent more torque to be sent to the rear wheels for enhanced traction.

    How it works
    In normal, everyday driving conditions, Real Time 4WD operates as a conventional front-wheel drive system. But if the front wheels begin to lose traction, then it automatically starts to send power to the rear wheels.

    At its heart is Honda’s innovative Dual Pump unit, which is integrated with the rear differential. This features two hydraulic pumps, one driven by the front wheels via a transfer gear and propeller shaft, the other by the rear wheels via the rear differential.

    While front and rear wheels turn at the same speed, the front and rear pumps operate at the same speed. During these conditions, hydraulic fluid circulates between the two pumps, however no pressure is generated. In effect, the fluid pressure created by the front pump is equalised by the rear pump.

    If the front wheels begin to turn faster because of slippery conditions, then the two hydraulic pumps turn at different rates, and hydraulic pressure proportional to that difference is generated. That pressure is fed to a multi-plate clutch that engages the front propeller shaft to the rear diff, which then feeds precisely the correct amount of torque to the rear wheels to increase overall traction.

    As rear wheel drive is only engaged when it is really necessary, frictional losses are reduced and thus there’s an improvement in fuel economy.

    In 2005, an additional one way ball cam and pilot clutch system was introduced, which detects slippage and provides drive transfer instantaneously. The mechanism consists of two plates, separated by six ball cams (large bearings) that move within ramped grooves. When a slight difference in rotation speed exists between the rear wheels and front wheels, the ball cams move within the ramped grooves and create pressure to instantly engage the main clutch. This happens before hydraulic pressure is generated by the two hydraulic pumps, so driving torque is transferred without any time lag.

    For 2007, the design has been enhanced further, providing better acceleration and hill climbing performance on slippery – in particular snow covered – surfaces, as well as smoother responses and improved performance when accelerating around corners or pulling away from slippery road junctions. It means the Dual Pump system matches even the best electronically controlled 4WD systems.

    The body
    CR-V uses a monocoque construction, rather than a separate body-on-frame, with all the benefits of improved rigidity, crash performance and weight reduction. It defines new standards for torsional and bending rigidity in the SUV market, achieving a level similar to D-segment saloons and a handling balance to match.

    More high-tensile steel for lighter, stronger body
    The benefits of using a higher percentage (33.5 to 58 per cent) of high tensile steel in the body of the new CR-V are threefold: greater stiffness; lighter weight; better crash protection.

    Almost 32kg are saved as a result of incorporating tougher and lighter materials throughout the body. The static bending stiffness has been improved by 85 per cent. There is also a better balance between front and rear lateral stiffness, and together with excellent rigidity around the damper fixing points, the CR-V delivers greater handling stability and response to driver input.

    This increase in body rigidity, together with the use of more noise absorption materials, has also made the cabin a more relaxing environment – on a par with premium saloon cars. The potential for tyre noise has been reduced by adopting passenger car tyre patterns which don’t suffer from increasing noise as they progressively wear.

    Specific additional items include:
    • Increased rigidity of the floor, roof, around the tailgate opening and the A and B pillars
    • Torque rod-type engine mounting to reduce engine idle and acceleration noise
    • Lightweight insulation applied to the dashboard, carpeting and roof lining to dampen high frequency road and engine noise
    • Complete front and rear door double sealing
    • Sound absorbing material applied to the inside of the roof, on the sides of the trunk, to the backs of the door panels, to the spare wheel cover and to the instrument panel
    • Sound absorbing material applied to the A pillar garnish
    • 5mm glass, increased from 3.5mm used in the front doors
    • Sound insulating glass for the windscreen

    VSA on all models
    VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) is standard across the CR-V range. It is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres, by applying brake force to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and managing the throttle and ignition systems. In the new CR-V, the control software has been revised to complement the enhanced Dual Pump four-wheel drive system.

    VSA monitors driver input using a series of sensors and then predicts a range of vehicle responses, while keeping an eye on the actual responses made by the car and the driver. If the actual response is outside the predicted response range, as when cornering forces exceed the tyres' performance, VSA automatically intervenes with corrective action. The system is calibrated to provide stability and predictability, without interfering with driving enjoyment.

    In the case of oversteer (which may lead to a spin), VSA applies braking to the outside front wheel to counter the yaw effect. On the other hand, if understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside rear wheel and reduces engine power to turn the car back on to the intended course.

    Braking system
    All CR-Vs are equipped with 4-channel ABS and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) which adjusts front-to-rear brake effort to achieve maximum braking performance and stability.

    In the event of a rear wheel locking-up on a slippery road, less braking pressure is applied to the opposite wheel to help stabilise the rear end. All models feature brake discs all round, 293mm ventilated at the front, and 302mm solid at the rear. The actual brake pedal action is now slightly shorter and lighter, for better control without being over-sensitive.

    Meanwhile, a variable, speed-sensitive steering system features quick gear ratios for an agile response to driver inputs, providing greater assistance at low speeds for easier manoeuvring, and less at higher speeds for a more direct feel and stability.

    Petrol-engined CR-Vs are equipped with electric power steering (EPS), while diesel-engined models use a hydraulically-assisted system.

    Wheels and tyres
    17-inch wheels are now fitted as standard on SE and ES models, shod with 225/65 R17 tyres, while 18-inch items are fitted to EX models. Low rolling resistance tyres contribute to the overall excellent fuel economy.

    Towing
    It’s now easier and safer to tow using a CR-V thanks to an increase in the towing capacity on models equipped with manual transmission. On the petrol-engined model it rises from 1500 to 1600kg, and on the diesel from 1500kg to a very competitive 2000kg (braked trailer).

    All CR-Vs are also fitted with Trailer Stability Assist, which will quickly restore stability by using a combination of reduced engine torque and precisely controlled braking should a towed trailer cause snaking.

    ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

    At a glance

    The 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine
    New, efficient engine means petrol models are faster but more frugal
    Output figures for the new 2.0-litre petrol engine are around the same as its predecessor. Power output is the same at 150PS, although that’s produced at a slightly lower 6,200rpm, while peak torque is 140lb.ft at 4,200rpm.

    Fuel economy is boosted due to greater efficiency from the new engine, new gearboxes and improved vehicle aerodynamics. On the Combined cycle, the manual version records an impressive 34.9mpg (34.5mpg auto gearbox), which is significantly better than the previous generation CR-V – and importantly compares favourably to other SUVs in the class (see table below).

    Performance is also enhanced, with the 0 to 62mph acceleration time dropping from 10.8 to 10.2 seconds for manual models (13.1 to 12.2 seconds for the auto).
