info sides for MB 560 SL?

    Hi there,

I have just bought an Mercedes Benz 560 SL, 1987.
I wanted to have some infos on it such as how many were built, where, how much the original price is and where to get parts etc.
I just wanna learn a bit more about my new old car.

    Thanks!

A good place start would probably wikipedia. Their article on the R107 is quite complete.

To my understanding, the 560 SL was only built for export markets, and not sold in Europe. Are you really located in Germany?

Seeing as you're in the USA this might be a good place to start:

You'll also find plenty of international forums in which to seek W107 info & tips. Lots of genuine or OE-quality parts are available through the aftermarket (thus avoiding Stealership-level markups) but be selective - there's no reason to instal crappy low-quality junk on any Benz.

W107 have a front crossmember safety (recall) issue - not sure if this also affects the later-models - but worth investigating. Another priority is to establish exactly when and how many miles ago the timing chain, guides & rails were last replaced - as their failure will cause serious damage to your engine. Btw an aftermarket rail is now available which is far superior to the MB factory item.

Finding and patronising a reputable MB-Independant workshop usually works out cheaper than risking the everyday non-specialist repair outfits (who often don't know what they're doing with MBs, or how to obtain high-quailty aftermarket parts) and avoids those expensive dealer-level prices.

The 560SL was a bit of a cruiser/bruiser in its day, they go well and are typically reliable with dilligent pre-emptive maintenance, plus a modicum of care and owner-involvement.

As with any vehicle, maintenance is cheaper than repair.
