Alex Zanardi claims he should have demonstrated a Williams Formula 1 car at last weekend’s United States Grand Prix, but remarkably he “forgot” to phone the team and make the necessary arrangements.
The former Champ Car champion and F1 driver lost both legs in an accident in 2001, but has since stunned the motorsport world by returning to racing using his prosthetic limbs.
He has been chasing an opportunity to drive an adapted F1 car for some time, and his chance should have come at Indianapolis.
“The test in Indy did not take place because I'm a jackass,” Zanardi told Italian magazine Autosprint.
“I was supposed to be calling the Williams team to finalise the details, but I didn't, I forgot.
“I promise that when I’m back from Mexico (where he is racing next weekend), I will dedicate myself to it more intensively.”
Zanardi is now trying to arrange a test at the Italian Grand Prix instead.
He is confident that the present tension between Williams and BMW will not harm his chances of returning to an F1 cockpit.
The Italian drives for BMW in the World Touring Car Championship, but also has strong relationships with members of the Williams team after driving for them in 1999.
“It's more Patrick Head wanting to do this thing than BMW,” said Zanardi.
“I hope the current strained relationship between them won't be to the detriment of the test.”
