Tragedy in Asia ~!!! Thousands killed by tidal waves

I found this out a couple of minutes ago.Off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra an earthquake(8.9 at the Richter scale) at the sea floor, caused a big tidal wave or Tsoenami to emerge. This tsoenami struck land throughout the entire coast of the Indian Ocean, causing a huge devastation.Thousands of people were killed and many others injured, many people are still missing.....

This is so sad to happen on Christmas, when noone should be killed.Nor by violence nor by nature... I hope the entire western world gives money, food, medicins and building materials to aid the people struck by this disaster...

For further news i'd like to refer to cnn.com

I'm sorry for those, who became homeless and for those, who died.

(This wasn't a tidal wave but a wave caused by an earthquake.)

It would be if people were making light of the situation, but since they aren't I don't see a problem with people expressing their condolences.

the earthquake was a 8.9Magnitude. That is huge... The one that striked San fran a couple months ago was only 6 magnitude.

May we take 5 mins to say a silent prayer and hope that all is well over there(we all know that we would not like to be in their situation, so this is the best we can do for now).

Yeah a biker mate of mine is out there with his family.
We're all praying he's OK and our thoughts are with those who have lost family friends and their homes.
Very sad

my Grandpa lives in one of the cities in the island of Sumatra, around the centre of the quake.

In the attached picture is just a little discription of where he lives...

the BLUE dot is his city and the RED dot is the centre of the quake....

We rang my grandma (who live in another city) last nite and she said that my grandpa felt the quake and ran outside quickly.... but jhe's okay... so i was glad. *phew*

CNN says 15,000 dead so far and God knows how many missing and homeless. My condolences to those who died and prayers for those (specially UCPiers) who've yet to hear from friends or family.

The Earthquake struck an area around 300Km from the Island of Sumatra. The area closest to the Earthquake, recently rounded up to a 9.0, was Aceh, which is a war-torn province of Indonesia. not much is known about the damage of this area because of the tight military presence there.

Major areas hit include Sri Lanka, India, The Maldives, Thailand (the resort of Phuket was hit exceptionally hard, with many tourist casualties) And the wave, caused by the earthquake, and hence a Tsunami, has been felt as far a field as Somalia and The West Coast of Australia.

Recent Aftershocks have been felt as heavy as 7.0 on the richter scale. a Huge disaster as these areas do not have the best infrastructure and the spread of disease and the threat of more aftershocks/tidal waves looms large.
