    Subaru B9 Tribeca

    SUBARU B9 TRIBECA

Tokyo, December 17, 2004 – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced that it has named its new crossover vehicle “SUBARU B9 TRIBECA.” The first-ever Subaru crossover utility vehicle with seven-passenger seating will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 10, 2005, and will be introduced in the North American market next year. "B9" of SUBARU B9 TRIBECA denotes Subaru's signature, horizontally-opposed Boxer engine and the number 9, which comes from a part of Subaru's product line-up category codes. Tribeca is a vibrant New York City neighborhood with many distinctive boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, where young artists work and cutting-edge trends are created that attract worldwide attention. Its name is an abbreviation of Triangle Below Canal Street (a triangle-shaped area south of Canal Street and north of Wall Street in Manhattan). Upon receiving feedback from Subaru owners, potential customers, and business partners on the name that was originally announced, the SUBARU B9X, FHI selected the name SUBARU B9 TRIBECA for the all-new vehicle. “We feel that the name SUBARU B9 TRIBECA has a greater resonance in the North American marketplace and will more effectively position the car when it is launched next early summer,” said Kyoji Takenaka, President and CEO of FHI. “Subaru can leverage the vested equity already associated with the progressive style, art, and culture that the name TRIBECA represents.”

Are these designed by some high school drop-outs or something? Who makes these ugly designs and what's worse, who lets them produce it?

I like it. The nose has grown on me, and I dont mind it now!

I just hope they don't update the Legacy/Outback with it, Legacy doesn't suit it.

this nose, designed as a corporate grille by ex-Alfa Romeo designer Andreas Zapatinas, is meant to evoke Subarus History of Aircraft building.

IMO it's ugly and unnecessary. nice design, shame about the face.

SUBARU B9 TRIBECA™ GAINS NEW SAFETY TECHNOLOGY FOR 2007

New Rollover Sensor System and Emergency Brake Assist
New Rear Camera and Satellite Radio Capability
    New B9 Tribeca Special Edition

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- Subaru of America, Inc. has enhanced the B9 Tribeca SUV for 2007 with new safety technology, additional comfort features and audio upgrades after its successful first year on the market. The first-ever Subaru SUV with available seating for seven passengers, the B9 Tribeca features a 245-hp 6-cylinder Boxer engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as its core technology.

Externally, the 2007 B9 Tribeca is distinguished by a new low-gloss black grille. A new B9 Tribeca Special Edition package combines an exclusive chrome mesh grille design, chrome-finish wheels and a standard XM Satellite Radio package for an MSRP of $1,295. Retuned suspension on all 2007 B9 Tribeca models provides an even smoother ride and enhanced NVH reduction without sacrificing driving character.

The B9 Tribeca is one of three Subaru models to be named “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), joining Impreza® and Legacy®. Subaru has further bolstered B9 Tribeca safety technology for 2007, equipping all models with a new Rollover Sensor System that deploys the standard side curtain airbags if it detects a potential vehicle rollover. Emergency Brake Assist joins the extensive roster of dynamic safety technology, which already includes ABS brakes, Vehicle Dynamics Control and four-wheel traction control. Emergency Brake Assist analyzes force and stroke on the brake pedal and increases hydraulic boost to provide enhanced emergency braking.

New Rear Vision Camera, Plus Additional Convenience
For 2007, all B9 Tribeca Limited models ordered with the optional GPS touch-screen navigation system will now include a Rear Vision Camera, as well. When the driver moves the transmission shift handle into Reverse, the center color LCD display will show what the camera lens can detect within its field of vision behind the vehicle. The screen view features distance/width guidelines to assist the driver in the backing up the vehicle.

Customers can also order the new Reverse Assist Sensors as an optional accessory for any B9 Tribeca model. Ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper detect objects behind the vehicle and emit an audible tone as the vehicle gets closer to the object behind it. A new remote starter feature allows the owner to start the vehicle remotely from up to 80 feet away, and a new shade-type retractable cargo area cover is available.

All B9 Tribeca models for 2007 come pre-wired for XM Satellite radio, and all gain a new console-mounted auxiliary audio jack to connect portable audio players, such as iPods, to play through the vehicle’s audio system. The B9 Tribeca Limited models add the convenience of a new two-position memory feature for the standard power-adjustable driver’s front seat.

The B9 Tribeca earned the highest rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests. The B9 Tribeca earned 5-stars in the frontal and side-impact crash tests for the driver and passenger seating positions, as well as a 4-star rating in the NHTSA rollover resistance test. (No SUV to date has earned 5-stars in the rollover test.)

    The Progressive SUV
Positioned above the Legacy® and Outback® vehicle lines, the B9 Tribeca has taken the Subaru brand into a new market segment. Its dramatic styling introduced the new Subaru design theme, highlighted by a distinctive front grill inspired by the company’s aircraft heritage. Subaru named the B9 Tribeca for the “triangle below Canal Street” section of New York City, an area that has become synonymous with the cutting edge of the city’s culture. The “B” stands for the Boxer engine, and “9” is for the model series.

    245-hp 6-Cylinder Boxer Engine
The B9 Tribeca is powered by a 3.0-liter DOHC 6-cylinder Boxer engine that produces 245 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 215 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,200 rpm. The 6-cylinder Boxer engine’s 81.7 hp/liter specific output is among the highest in the segment. Technology contributing to the impressive performance and a broad torque curve includes Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing, Active Valve Lift System (AVLS) and a variable controlled intake manifold.

The 6-cylinder Boxer engine is teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission and the brand’s most advanced version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. That system, also featured in the Outback® 3.0 R L.L.Bean Edition models, combines Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive with the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability system and four-wheel traction control system (TCS).

The 5-speed automatic transmission’s SPORTSHIFT feature allows intuitive and responsive manual shift control when desired. In automatic mode, using a lateral-g sensor and cornering logic, the transmission can select and hold the appropriate gear to enhance cornering performance. The transmission will actively downshift to maintain optimal traction and control on inclines, as well.

Advanced Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with VDC
With more brands adding All-Wheel Drive – especially luxury brands – it is worth noting that Subaru introduced four-wheel drive passenger cars more than 30 years ago and automatic full-time All-Wheel Drive nearly 20 years ago. Beginning in 1997, Subaru became the first brand in the U.S. to make All-Wheel Drive standard on all its models.

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides excellent balance thanks to the longitudinally mounted Boxer engine and the way power flows from it through the transmission and to the rear differential along a straight, near-horizontal path. In the B9 Tribeca (and Outback 3.0 R L.L.Bean Edition models), Subaru has integrated its All-Wheel Drive technology with a stability system and 4-wheel traction control to form one of the car industry’s most sophisticated and effective dynamic handling systems.

The VTD version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive utilizes a planetary gear-type center differential and an electronically controlled hydraulic transfer clutch to control power distribution between the front and rear wheels. Under most conditions, VTD splits the power 45:55, with the rearward bias contributing to sporty, agile handling.
The VTD system continually optimizes power distribution in response to driving conditions. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) is a highly sophisticated stability system that actively controls the center differential’s power distribution as part of its function. VDC ensures optimal torque distribution to the appropriate wheel based on input from steering wheel angle, yaw and lateral g-force sensors.

The VDC system also monitors input from the ABS brakes, adjusting individual wheel braking as needed, helping to maintain vehicle control under a variety of driving conditions. Integrated with VDC, the 4-wheel electronic traction control system (TCS) provides an extra layer of handling control without impeding VTD All-Wheel Drive operation.

    Flexible 5- or 7-Passenger Capability
The B9 Tribeca is available in a variety of 5- and 7-passenger configurations. The 7-passenger model is equipped with a standard 50/50 split fold-down third-row seat that features integral headrests and a carpeted back surface. For added passenger comfort, the 7-passenger model also features three-mode heated front seats and an auxiliary rear cabin air conditioner with air registers in the headliner.

The seating configuration demonstrates outstanding flexibility for passengers and cargo. The second row rear seats feature a 60/40 split bench and a 40/20/40 split rear seat back with fold-flat capability. The second row seats offer 7.8 inches of fore/aft travel to optimize second- and third-row passenger comfort. Second row seats also recline independently in a 60/40 split. The third-row seats accommodate two passengers and fold flat in a 50/50 split for cargo space flexibility. With rear and third-row seats folded, maximum cargo space measures 74.4 cu. ft. Cargo room measures 37.6 cu. ft. behind the rear seat and 8.3 cu. ft. behind the third seat in 7-passenger models.

    Luxurious Interior
In its design, fit-and-finish and feature content, the B9 Tribeca interior presents the most luxurious package ever from Subaru. The sophisticated twin cockpit design is highlighted by a flowing, sculpted dash and center console, with aluminum-look trim. The driver faces large, clear electroluminescent dials and easy-to-reach switchgear.

Subtle ambient interior lighting provides a sophisticated touch by illuminating the front and rear footwells, the center console and cup-holders. The center console is capped by a seven-inch vehicle information screen that groups the readouts for the audio system, clock, fuel economy and outside temperature (and navigation system when equipped).

The B9 Tribeca provides a very high level of quiet and comfort. Standard amenities include a dual-zone automatic climate control system; 8-way power driver’s seat; 4-way power passenger seat; leather-wrapped steering wheel with remote audio controls, and a 100-watt AM/FM stereo system with CD player (with MP3/WMA playback capability) and six speakers.

Luxury is stepped up in the B9 Tribeca Limited models, which are equipped with leather seating surfaces for front and second rows; a power tilt/slide glass moonroof; two-position memory for the front driver’s power-adjustable seat; a 160-watt AM/FM stereo with six-disc in-dash CD changer; eight upgraded speakers, and a rear sub-woofer (nine speakers total). The 5-passenger B9 Tribeca Limited model in addition features three-mode heated front seats (which are already included in the standard 7-passenger model). An optional GPS navigation system is available for all B9 Tribeca Limited models and incorporates a new Rear Vision Camera for 2007.

The optional rear-seat entertainment system for the 7-seat Limited model consists of a large, nine-inch diagonal wide-screen format LCD and DVD player featuring remote inputs for video games and a video camera. The package includes two sets of wireless headphones and a remote control. The optional GPS navigation system (Limited models only) uses touch-screen technology for ease of use and also includes external buttons to access its most-used features.

    Solid Foundation
A rigid body structure is a fundamental building block in developing the ideal balance of handling response and ride comfort. Subaru built the B9 Tribeca on a highly modified version of the Outback platform to provide a level of ride and handling not generally expected from SUVs.

Compared to the Outback, the B9 Tribeca features a longer wheelbase and length and wider front and rear track. The front suspension has been revised to provide enhanced ride smoothness in this larger vehicle. A double wishbone rear suspension system replaces the multi-link configuration used in Outback, providing more interior room for the available third-row seat while preserving crisp, agile handling and a smooth ride.
Standard 18 x 8-inch aluminum-alloy 7-spoke wheels use 255/55 R18 Goodyear Eagle LS2 all-season tires. The B9 Tribeca is capable of towing a trailer of up to 3,500 pounds when equipped with the available accessory towing package.

    Advanced Active and Passive Safety
The B9 Tribeca has been optimized for both active safety, the technology that helps the driver to avoid hazardous situations, and passive safety, the technology that helps protect occupants in the event of a collision. Safety design starts with the vehicle architecture. The Ring Frame Reinforced structure helps absorb the energy of an impact and helps protect vehicle occupants. Inside, the B9 Tribeca is equipped with the Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system (occupant-sensing dual-stage driver and passenger airbags), front seat-mounted side impact air bags and standard curtain side air bags (front and second rows), now with the Roll Sensor System for 2007.

The standard 4-channel/4-sensor ABS braking system with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist helps to ensure confident, safe braking performance. The EBD system automatically adjusts front/rear brake proportioning based on vehicle load and is more effective than conventional brake proportioning valves. A standard direct Tire-Pressure Monitoring System alerts the driver to potentially hazardous inadequate tire pressure.

The B9 Tribeca is built at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

    SUBARU UNVEILS REDESIGNED 2008 TRIBECA
AND DEBUTS NEW 3.6-LITER H6 ENGINE

    • 2008 Tribeca Features More Style, More Power and Improved Efficiency
    • New 3.6-liter Delivers 256 HP and 247 lb.-ft. on Regular Gas
    • Seven Passenger Seating in an Award Winning Interior

New York, NY April 4, 2007 -- Subaru today unveiled the redesigned and newly named 2008 Subaru Tribeca at the New York International Auto Show. With powerful new styling, a new, larger displacement 3.6-liter H6 engine, improved performance and fuel efficiency, the new 2008 Subaru Tribeca delivers a unique balance of style, safety and functionality in a progressive SUV form.

    NEW DESIGN, MORE STYLE

The exterior design of the new Tribeca is both streamlined and powerful, with a new, wider and taller grille, new front fenders and new hood design. The grille is now integrated into the front bumper, featuring a new chrome spread-wing design, with the Subaru star cluster badge as the focal point. A raised hood line, deeper front valance and new headlamps visually widen and heighten the Tribeca, establishing greater road presence with a more SUV-like appearance. The new grille flows into a powerful silhouette, enhanced by new rear three-quarter windows. The rear quarter windows are also functional, and with the addition of new larger side-view mirrors, improve side and rear vision as well as increasing visibility for third row passengers. The side profile also features powerful fender and wheel forms that enhance the Tribeca’s signature rising character line. All-new rear styling includes a new rear valance below the tailgate and new, wider taillamps.

MORE POWER: NEW 3.6-LITER H6 ENGINE

The dramatic exterior styling changes reflect the major changes under the skin for the 2008 Subaru Tribeca. A new 3.6-liter boxer engine has been designed with a goal of improving low-end torque and also lowering consumer running costs with a change to regular unleaded fuel. The larger engine displacement has increased engine torque to 247 lb.-ft., up from 215, and horsepower to 256 from 245, providing improved low-end torque without sacrificing high-rpm power. The new engine package, despite the larger engine size, not only maintains emissions levels but delivers improved fuel efficiency in real world driving situations. To achieve these goals without affecting engine packaging, a unique shortened con rod was created to allow
for a new and larger displacement engine without increasing the physical dimensions of the power unit. Keeping the deck height of the engine the same, the Tribeca is able to maintain its excellent low center of gravity. Improved cooling efficiency - needed to achieve the use of regular fuel - was achieved through a new common rail cooling system that individually cools each cylinder with water separation chambers rather than allowing water to flow from cylinder to cylinder. This allows for increased engine efficiency and standardized timing for all cylinders. The new 3.6-liter engine features Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves (the 3.0-liter engine had AVCS on the intake side only).
The new 3.6-liter H6 engine is connected to a substantially revised 5-speed automatic transmission that features an all-new torque lock-up converter and a new transmission control unit that deliver faster shifts and quicker reaction time. The new transmission delivers smoother shifts with less lag time and weighs less than the previous system, for a total weight reduction of 9.7-lbs. for the new drivetrain. The transmission drives through the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Enhancing the AWD system are standard Variable Torque Distribution (VTD), standard Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and four-wheel traction control system (TCS).

    IMPROVED ACCESS AND COMFORT

The design of the award-winning Tribeca interior is maintained, but third row seating access has been enhanced. Also new for 2008 is a re-calibrated rear suspension with new bushings to improve ride comfort. New for 2008, the second row seat now features a tilt-and-slide control on both the driver's and passenger’s side and a new assist spring that reduces the effort needed to slide the second row seat. Also new are molded assist grab handles on the lower C-pillar to ease step in to the third row.

AWARD WINNING INTERIOR BLENDS DESIGN AND COMFORT

The sophisticated twin cockpit design features a flowing, sculpted dash and center console design. Aluminum-look trim highlights the sculpted shapes of the dashboard. Electroluminescent dials and subtle ambient interior lighting provide a sophisticated touch, illuminating the front and rear footwells, the center console and cup-holders. The center console is dominated by an information center that groups the readouts for the audio system, clock, fuel economy and outside temperature. A seven-inch touch screen information center is standard with the navigation system. The easy-touse audio and climate control system controls are located just below the screen.

    FLEXIBLE 5 OR 7-PASSENGER CAPABILITY

The Tribeca is available in a variety of 5 and 7-passenger configurations. The 7- passenger model is equipped with a standard with a 50/50 split fold-down third-row seat that features integral headrests and carpeted back surface. For added passenger comfort, the 7-passenger model also features an auxiliary rear cabin air conditioner with fan speed control in the second row. The 7 passenger Tribeca models can be equipped with an available rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

    SAFETY

The new 2008 Tribeca was designed with achieving the highest ratings in the auto. The previous generation B9 Tribeca achieved top honors in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests with 5 stars in both the frontal and side-impact crash tests for both the driver and passenger seating positions. These results are in addition to the 4 star rating in the NHTSA tests for rollover resistance. (No SUV to date has earned 5-stars in the rollover test.) The Subaru Tribeca features a Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame Structure, occupant-sensing, dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, seat-mounted side impact air bags, and standard curtain side air bags (front and second rows). A Roll Sensor system that detects a potential vehicle rollover and deploys the standard side curtain airbags is also standard. In addition, the Tribeca features Brake Assist on its standard ABS brake system, Vehicle Dynamics Control and fourwheel traction control. Brake Assist analyzes the force and stroke on the brake pedal and
increases hydraulic boost to provide enhanced emergency braking, also activating the ABS system early if needed.
