Are there any passenger cars sold in America with diesel engines?

And I mean cars, not SUVS,trucks, or commericals.

And I don't just mean are there any American cars sold with diesel engines. I mean are there cars from ANY country that are sold in America with a diesel engine?

Apart from dedicated sports cars manufacturers such as Porsche, Ferrari etc. I don't think there is a single company that doesn't offer diesel versions of most or all of their range in the UK.

the reason diesels aren't present in the US is twofold -- first, we don't have low-sulfur diesel (yet) which hurts emissions, and two our emissions laws are tougher on N2O. The VWs are no longer going to be sold in a year I think because of tougher emissions laws.

The quality of diesel fuel in the USA is far lower than in Europe, not only related to the sulphur content, but there are many other contaminations as well.
The NO-x requirements could be stricter than in europe, but can be met. The particle problem which is more of an issue to modern diesels, because they produce ever smaller particles can and will be solved by the PSA introduced particle filter, which reduces emissions by 99%.
I am not surprised to read that VW will stop selling diesel cars in the USA later this year. They were very late in accepting that the French filters might be the way to go, an attitude initially adopted by all German carmakers, but gradually now all of them have turned wiser.

In view of the CO2 emissions, the fact that the engine burn less fuel automatically reduce that problem significantly.

In the late 1970's OIdsmobile marketed a large V8 diesel limousine, that was also sold in Europe, There were too many technical problems to create a breakthrough.

D-quick, the Mercedes compressor diesels are turbo charged, and not powwered by the engine itself

Ford is looking into a v-6 diesel for the US, made by International. And M-B will probably bring their S600 CDI to america.

I would very much doubt that International will be involved in developing a V6. Together with PSA Ford developed a very nice 2.7 litre, which a.o. can be had in the Jaguar SType.

I doubt it. The only diesels we get here are are the Hummer H1, and those big Lorries or whatever you call 'em. Of course, you're free to import anything you want. You won't believe what wierd cars we get here
