Japanese economy cars, yes, japanese sports cars, definetly not.
I could get 2 nice used C4s for the price of a Supra TT with the same milage, that is if I can even find one.

Early93Viper, did you mean Japanese cars by any chance? Because American cars can actually be ricy too..... If being so I see an equal amount of Japanese and American cars on the streets. They both have different target markets and with the huge variety of people in the US they both end up selling well.

Japanese cars are also going through a golden era en my opinion.

Back when I was in high school (a gazilion years ago) sure we put nice paint jobs, cool wheels and tires, but the heart of the car was the engine. It took time, money and knowledge.

Now kids just slap on the body kits, most don't bother getting a custom paint job, they just get stickers, noisy mufflers and so forth. This takes no effort at all. Sure some "ricers" have modified engines, making them real custom cars but the rest are just wannabies. As far as the pimped out SUVs go, that's just bling bling, "look at me I have the money to do this to my car". Sad

doing up cars isnt just about working the engine. you have to make them look nice aswell by putting rims, bodykits and a muffler that sounds nice

My guess over this rice craze is all speculation, however, I think it may be because of movies like Fast and the Furious, but I don't think that is the only anwser. You have to look at the fact that youth doesn't have a lot of money. What can little money get you a cheap car, a cheap car turns out to be a slow, realitivly boring hatchback or coupe. So when said youth gathers money they buy parts, and more parts and more parts and so on and so forth until you have a ricer. Performance is hard to be bought in a sub-$20,000 category, IMO. That is new, because you can get a great used car. This is my theory on it, but what the hell do I know.

Is that so? Is a car faster 'cause it looks fast? Is a car faster cause it sounds "nice"?

I would prefer "understatement" where it is not obvious that your car is faster than that particular model on average. Therefore I only changed engine management, and as my car model is mostly driven by not so speed oriented drivers I am sometimes able to surprise other people. That puts a smile on my face. I don't need any body kits etc, it only adds to the weight.

When it comes to rice, i dont really care. I think alot of people go a bit overboard with their rice-paranoia. There is the unfortunate fact though that if you genuinely want to make a fast 4 cylinder car, if you also want the looks to back that up you may resort to what some would call rice with low bodykits, large wheels and rear spoilers etc.
