It's also the fact you can personalise your car to show off who you are, rather than just drive something standard.

There are more tasteful ways of doing it though.

leave it be. the really nice ones knows what they are doing. (it's just that most (not all, just MOST) mexicans think that adding decals such a type r to a mazda protege or a nismo on a honda civic or stupid spoilers or led washers think that they are doing the modding scene a favor and those are the ones that are giving the import scene a bad name).

it's the same about the older generation, who tuned their the classics such as the r'runner, the 'cuda, the boss stangs, the nova, the chevelles, i bet the older generations are asking the same question as you are, why are these grease heads in the garage day and night and starting up their loud monsterous engines at 2 am?

they share the same thing you and i both love, the love of cars. i had a porshe (european), currently owns a ford (american muscle), and a honda (japanese), so i relate to them all.

it's ok. as long as they don't pull up to the light and wanna try to race you, if that happens, just toss pennis at their car like i do, then open full throttle that v-8 beast and let them enjoy your exxon-mobile fumes.

I agree.

I don't like the term 'ricer', I prefer Tuner. Used to be there was nothing to do to your car to personalize it except put on aftermarket wheels, and there weren't many choices, or a custom color paint....but the Tuner scene has opened up many avenues for creativity. Good taste or bad taste it's good for car enthusiast worldwide.

Never has America made such great cars NEVER.
i can't believe you just opened a can of worms!! you'll never hear the end of this dabate.

i tend to think of the past as the golden era of american cars. (the two fords you listed revisted the past). think about it. you have so much of a selection. chevy had the chevelles, novas, camaros. dodge had the challenger, dart, charger. ford had the torinos, the stangs. olds had the 442, and the cutlass. plymouth had the cuda, duster, r'runner, fury, gtx. hell, even mercury had the cougar. those were the days...even though i wasn't born yet.

I agree... it will never be like the '60s again for several reasons. First all muscle cars were affordable; today's Vipers and Cadillac CTS-V and Corvettes are way too expensive for the average 18-year-old. Back in the '60s, a kid could afford an SS 396 Chevelle, 390 Fairlane or 383 Road Runner after just a few weeks working at a job.

Fuel prices were around .35 cents/gallon. For 2 or 3 dollars, you could cruise all night; for 4 or 5 dollars, you could race all night!

The suburbs (and cities) were much less crowded- easier to street race back then. And, sometimes, the cops would even not bother trying to catch street racers. As long as they raced on something like airport roads or at 3:00 AM on deserted roads.

Back in the '60s, there was no blocking off streets (like Van Nuys Blvd) to stop "cruising."

As you said, skoobz, there was a wonderful selection of muscle cars back then and even the name/number combinations sounded A LOT better than some of the strange-sounding names of today's cars.
Real names like: (These are all from memory.)
Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum and 426 Hemi.
or
Dodge Challenger R/T SE (Special Edition) 440-6 PACK
or
Dodge Dart GTS 340.
or
Plymouth Road Runner w/Street Hemi.
or
Plymouth AAR (All-American Racer) 'Cuda, 340-6 bbl.
or
Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396; 454 LS-6 (450 horsepower) w/cowl induction.
or
Chevrolet Camaro RS 350; Yenko 427 Camaro.
or
Pontiac GTO Judge; GTO Ram Air IV.
or
Pontiac Firebird 400 H.O. Ram Air III.
or
Pontiac Grand Prix SJ 428/390 hp.
or
Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30.
or
Buick GSX 455 Stage 1.
or
Ford 428 Mustang Cobra Jet.
or
Ford Fairlane 428 Super Cobra Jet with functional hood scoop.
or
Ford Mustang Mach 1.
or
Mercury Cougar XR-7 390 and 427.
or
AMC Rambler Rebel Machine 390 High-Output (the owner's manual, yes the *owner's manual* mentioned that it could run 14.3 sec 1/4 miles!).

If I was old enough back then, I would have went straight to the Dodge dealer and bought a '68 or '69 Dodge Charger R/T with 440, auto trans, console & buckets, 3.55:1 rear axle ratio. Kind of like this one in the photo (but this one has a 426-Hemi):
