4 cylinder turbo Vs V8

what do you think is better for motorsport or street and why?

are you kidding me?

if you try to go rallying in a V8 rather than a turbo its kinda bad. or drag race in a turbo-4 is also kinda bad. therefore the MUST be equally good.... (not being serious)

not really the last rally i watched was a local rally in australia and a V8 dominated because of how much power it had. the 4wd turbos couldnt keep up.

ok thats one case vs how many others?

the simple thing is turbo charged inline 4s are lighter then v8s and give similar power output, and with the anti lag system and low weight turbines which spool up much faster then say cast iron turbos the lag is virtually elliminated

theoretically an inline 4 of half the displacement of a v8 needs only a turbo which runs at 1 bar (or 1.2 cuz its not 1 bar across the rev range, 1 bar average is needed) will give the same output as the v8, and current rally cars run at over 2 bar, only reason they "only" put out 300 hp (for wrc) is they have air restrictors in the intake, and if you check out the subaru impreza's stats you can tell they're so obviously lying considering their car makes 435 ft lbs of tq at 4000 rpm, and "max" hp of 300 hp at 5500 rpm ... do the math 435 at 4000 = 331 hp

they're lying their asses off, i wouldnt be surprised if the current crop of wrc cars put out in excess of 400 hp

yes turbo may be lighter but it does not give instant throttle response and it also restricts the gases flowing out of the exhaust. i also think that V8's are more reliable. but i do think your right turbos are better for wrc. but why do V8's dominate in drag racing and in touring cars. Why is this the case.

For a drag race, I would say the V8, and if it is light enough I would take it on the track too. For rally......I do not personally know much about rally, but most of what I have heard, the 4's tend to win (The case mentioned before.....don't really know too much so I'm just going to go with the majority of what I have heard).

I think V8's do so well is because they can be lighter then a V12, consume less gas (not neccasarily, but if you had two identical engines except in cylinder count, the one with less cylinders would use less fuel), yet, V8's can still produce incredibly amounts of power.

the best example of V's would be the formula 1 V10.

touring cars you want reliability above all things i suppose, which is where natural aspiration can be prefered over forced induction as theres less things to go wrong. WRC i suppose with their very short ratios theyre able to keep in the powerband without too much fuss, but turbo 4's just fit the category better

With the anti lag on wrc cars their on boost all the time and make torque at such low rpm's it makes a modified v8 (big cam big heads) look sick.

Didn't Bentley used to use turbos that had small electric motors to keep them at least partially spooled at lower engine speeds? That sounds like an ideal compromise there...eliminates the lag while allowing you to run far bigger turbos.

They have this anti lag system now,not sure how it works, the idea is the the turbo is always spooled up,sounds good in theory I guess
