    Renault 4 1961-1992

The Renault 4, also known as the 4L (pronounced "Quatrelle" in French), is a small economy car produced by the French automaker Renault between 1961 and 1992. It was the first front-wheel drive family car produced by Renault.

The car was launched at a time when several decades of economic stagnation were giving way to growing prosperity and surging car ownership in France. The first million cars were produced by 1 February 1966, less than four and a half years after launch; eventually over eight million were built, making the Renault 4 a commercial success because of the timing of its introduction and the merits of its design.

I hate missing model years, so if anyone has a clue regarding the missing years I would appreciate that. Sometimes it takes 'a bit' too much of research I can be bothered with... But obviously the rallying ones could be identified.

The R4 will be prominently featured at Retromobile next week, when I return from there I'll put up a selection. A 1979 R4GTL was after all my first car.

I have always found it strange that Renault went from (alpha)numerical names in the past to a modern line up of actual pronounceable words.
I find it strange because it seem like the current trend is towards alphanumerics. I guess carmakers think it lends a sense of the cars being more German(e).
