Oh yes, Aston Martin raced for many many years at Le Mans. They raced most years from the late 20s to the mid 60s and then had a few more sporadic attempts, the last being with this particular car, the AMR1. This year's attempt with the DBR9 has been marketed as a glorious return to Le Mans for the marque in a similar vein to Bentley's return a few years ago.

And much before than the Group C effort they were winning endurance races already... In the fifties they raced the Aston Martin DB3S, a racing developement of the road going DB3 if I'm not mistaken, much the same as Jaguar did with the XK120, passing on to the XK120C, and finally the C-Type and the D-Type purpose built racers. Astons in the fifties had something of a handicap with their DB3S (and later DBR1) models, as they stuck to limited displacement of 2922cc (the same as the road engines), when Jag's had a 3.4-litre engine and the Italians ran 4-litre (and even bigger) engines, namely various Ferraris (290S/315S/335S) and the Maserati 450 S. But then in 1958 all changed, as the rules stated that no engine in a endurance race car could be bigger than 3 liters. So everybody's loss was Astons gain, and as such Aston Martin won Le Mans in 1959 and the World Sports Car Championship. After that the racing programme freezed, despite timid efforts with the DB4 GT and DB4 GT Zagato, until the Nimrod and subsequent works effort of the 80's with the Group C cars, which unfortunately didn't met with success.

    Aston Martin DB3S

    Aston Martin DBR1

EDIT: And of course the Prewar efforts (which I had forgot), with the Aston Martin Ulster, Internationa, 1.5 Litre, and so on...

Sorry if I cannot express myself correctly, but I don't know English as good as I want, so my answers will probably be the same in many cases.
