Same car, different body. The new car will be ready for 2006, and will comply fully with the LMP1 regulations.

This LMP1 Hybrid has been first seen out on track on Monday August 8th 2005. So it's almost five days out. The original LMP was first raced in 2003.

Sportscars are per definition not single seaters.

I think the idea is that being sports prototypes they were originally supposed to be prototypes of possible future road sportscars. Clearly that went out of the window a LONG time ago, but they still maintain the rule about the cars having to be able to seat 2 to keep alive the tradition of prototype racing.

At least that is what I believe to be the case.

LMP1 and LMP2....1 person and 2 person prototypes, respectively. That's what I've been led to believe.

Yeah but LMP1 type cars (Audi R8 etc) also have a space for a 2nd person.

Really? I don't think regulation would make it necessary for LMP1 to have two seats...the Panoz Roadster S had one in LMP1....we need to get MeA in here.
