I'm definitive that I have a picture of a 480 Cabriolet somewhere, just can't seem to find it now. I can add it later if anyone wants, unless someone is able to add it here before me.
Yes, we do want hi-res cabrio pics.Originally Posted by twinspark

If I remember correct, it was a one-off made by Volvo. The pic is in a book that I'll have in my hands tonight.
Edit: looking through google image search it probably wasn't one-off, quite rare still.

Here's the picture. Too bad it appeared to be a two page pic, and I had to scan it in three pieces so it's quite a crappy pic.
Looks much better than hatchback.Originally Posted by twinspark
Actually, there were at least 3 attempts to make a 480 Cabrio. However, none of them made it into production.Originally Posted by twinspark
The "official" 480 cabrio was developed in 1986 and was scheduled to be presented during the Amsterdam International Motorshow in February 1987.
This first public showing was cancelled at the very last moment, for an unknown (to me at least) reason. Even the press release had already been distrubuted. This prototype (this time fully running) reappeared on the 1992 Geneva Motorshow. The reasons it never made it to production were two:
1. a British company responsible for future production of the cabrio conversion, Motor Panel, went bankrupt
2. the car was destined primarily for the American market to support sellings of the 480 hatchback, but the hatchback failed miserably in the U.S. (its main competitor - Honda Accord Aerodeck - was 1/3 cheaper)
The second attempt was by a Belgian company EBS. Together with Robert Koch (the man responsible for the original 480) they built a 480 cabrio without a rollbar. Unfortunately Volvo didn't approve this conversion and the company didn't have enough money to produce it all by themselves. Only a few prototypes were made, at least one still exists in Belgium.
The 3rd version was a co-production between Dutch TonCar and Belgian ACT (they also built 440 Estate). Two prototypes were made: a green one and a red one. The project was abandoned as they failed to raise enough funds to begin production.
Supposedly also British company C.P. Motors built a blue 480 convertible, fitted with a boot spoiler.
Apart from that, I'm sure there are also some 480s converted by enthusiastic owners.
A few pics (the red one is an EBS conversion, the dark blue one is original Volvo)

It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

The text with the picture I posted only says that it's a prototype announced in 1990. But it's from a Volvo history book by Christer Olsson and I'm not sure how reliable that information is, as there are other errors in the book. Some good pictures though.
