    Bmw 700

The BMW 700 was introduced in 1959 and was the ultimate means to generate enough cash flow for the company to continue the development of the BMW middle class car, which saw the light in 1961 and became the mother of all current Beemers.
The 700 was fitted with the 2 cylinder boxer motorcycle engine and the body was designed by Michelotti. The car was first presented as a Coupe and was available with a 32 or 40 BHP engine (700 Sport, later to become CS). During the IAA in 1959 also a sedan version was introduced, on the same chassis but with a less steep roofline, allowing for more headroom in the back. The car was an instant hit and during the IAA enough orders were taken to allow for two years of production.
The 700 CS was a very popular entrant in touring car racing also and was unbeatable in the up to 700 cc class. The coupes became later on available as cabriolets as well.

The next version of the 700 became the 700 LS, with a 16 centimeter longer wheelbase, but a 32 centimeter increase in length, the additional 16 cm being entirely used for the engine bay. A four cylinder engine was planned there, but the project was abandoned after a few test examples were made. The long wheel base were also available as Coupe and Cabriolet

Production ceased in 1965 after which over 188000 cars of all versions were made. Almost 50% of these were 700LS models.

Shown here are a 700 Coupe, the 700 CS that was used by Jacky Ickx during his very first races, a very rare 700 LS Cabriolet and the original 700 sedan

This is the 700 RS, which was developed specially for hillclimbing, the 700 engine now fitted before the rear axle. The engine was changed to OHC with the Fuhrmann derived bevel rod for driving the camshafts. The engine output was 70 BHP at 8000 revs, and the car obliterated the competition (Fiat/Abarth) duirng the period 1961-1963. In total 19 were produced.

Welcome, yes any info would be nice, especially if you say that only two were made. According to our sources about 20 were produced (Book by Ostwald). Any racing history known about your car?

These two cars were supposed to be the first of 19 slated but the neue klasse BMW was introduced in 1961. so the interest in the 700 began waining at BMW...only these two were ever done despite information to the contrary. My car had an illustrious history over 5-6 years. with BMW it was driven mostly by Hand Stuck snr. till he retired then was driven by the BMW team drivers, Eppelin, Von Falkenhausen and others. In 1961 it and Stuck were the national hill-climb champions in Germany, Austria and Italy. The car was the sold to Herr Willi Martini aus Adenau (a racing enthusiast and BMW dealer) and was campained with the number two car by team Martini for several seasons.

That is very interesting to hear. What is the current status of the car? Any outings recently or planned and if so where?

The same book by Oswald (Alle BMW Automobile seit 1928) also mentions special coupes built by Martini, based on the 700 series. When he wanted to commercialise these cars it was allegedly forbidden by BMW.

The car is in original condition (as retired 1963) with exception repaint and leather seats done in 1983. I have done some conservation and undid a few things, done to the car over the last owners tenure. when he repainted her he put on some mirrors the car never had and a top fortunately both were only bolt ons and easily removed and no damage was done to the originality of the car. I have replaced an aftermarket tach with an original. Have found a set of original wheels for static display only as they are not strong enough to drive on. After careful consideration of the condition of the vehicle and its worth in original condition as opposed to a ground up restoration i have elected to conserve and preserve, restoration can be done at anytime the cars condition warrant it. the basic platform is very, very sound and will not be altered while in my possesion. the car runs and drives marvelously. I show the car at select venues several times a year. most big shows like monterey etc. have expressed an interest but do not have a class for the car as it is unrestored and post war vintage...their loss i say...
