    Daf 66

The last new type produced with the name Daf is the 66. The front of the car was changed to make it more modern, but the most important change was the new back axle construction. It was a Dion axle with leaf springs and a differential. The 66 also had a single plated clutch. It was available in two versions "Luxe" and "Super Luxe". The SL had a better working assisted brake system.

In 1973 the Marathon version appeared with a larger 1.300 cc engine with 57 hp. It is recognizable by it´s double head lights.
The cars where still available after the take-over by Volvo on the 1st of January 1975. It wasn´t untill August of that year that the Daf 66 was transformed into the Volvo 66.

Daf also produced a special version of the 66 for the Dutch army, called the 66 YA. Although it looked a little like a Jeep, it was equipped with standard rear wheel drive, so it lacked terrain capabilities. The YA had a 24 Volt electrical system. Only 1.201 were built, and nowadays it is much sought after.

this example was not in very good condition. It looked a bit rusty. the paint job was nice, but not done by a VERY good painter. It had obviously been restored some years back.

I have recently read a very old pocket book that belongs to my dad.It described the welfare of the DAF team in the London-Sydney Marathon. The DAF became 6th or 7th in a field made up with much bigger cars, like Citroens DS and others.Quite some perormance by this fairly small manufacturer !
