I saw this exact prototype back in 1992 at Sevilla. World Exposition called Expo 92, Italian pavillion.
There was one of the very first Daytonas too. I'm not sure if it was also the prototype. I was 15.

To many eyes the 1994 Spider and GTV production models looked like show cars. To prepare the public for the radical shape of these newcomers, Alfa Romeo designed the Proteo prototype in 1991. This had the rising belt-line and bonnet (hood) cut-outs for the headlamps, which made the Spider/GTV so distinctive, but was based on the 164 and featured four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and removable glass roof panels.
