    Opel Ascona 400

    Opel Ascona 400

In the eighties Opel made serious work of the World Rallye Championships, and the initial weapon of choice was the Ascona B model.

The homologation special had a 2.4 litre four cylinder engine, with a special twin cam cylinder head made by Cosworth and Bosch L-Jetronic indirect fuel injection. In standard trim the engine produce 144 BHP but in rallye trim well over 200 was available. That Opel was serious was proven by the fact that they hired Walter Rohrl, and indeed he delivered the beans by becoming the World Champion in 1982.

Only 448 original 400s were made who are outwardly recognizable by a special paintjob, spoilers and wide wheel arches to accommodate the larger wheels.

The car shown here was present at the 2003 Essen Technoclassica

The car you showed in post #1 is an original ex-works-training-car from Walter Röhrl! It is owned by a guy near my hometown (he moved to the neighbour-city, so the cars license changed from my hometown's "GT" to "HF").

Here is the same car in action at the Rallye Deutschland 2003 (a non-digital picture, made with a Canon Eos IX)

    Welcome to Ultimatecarpage.

In this case I think you will get little response, as trading cars is not part of this site. I am pretty sure that Opel specialists form that era might be a better source to help you out. After all I don't think there have been many works cars around, so each individual car's history is probably well known.

I too prefer the Manta. One of the great RWD Group B cars in my opinion. The Ascona, on the other hand, is a bit bland.

    But what a sound...

Well, just to be different, I must say I'd rather have the Ascona!

A few months ago I almost bought a red, 2 door, 1.9-engined Ascona. Sadly it was rusted in some nasty spots, due to having lived the best part of his life in Germany's salty roads.

I quite like the Ascona 400`s, they certainly look good in the Yellow/White Dealer Opel Team Rally Livery,

But I too prefer the Opel Manta 400, An awesome RWD Group B Car, that sounded & looked great!
