Renault 12 Gordini
In order to replace the ageing R8 Gordini, Renault presented its successor in 1971, using the body and the chassis of the 12, introduced in 1969. The engine was the 1565 cc unit, derived from the Renault 16 TS and tuned up to 125 bhp. This allowed for a top speed of 185 kph. A 5 speed gear box was standard as well as four disc brakes. The whole packages weighed in less than 900 kg.
Despite the larger engine, the 12 Gordini never met with the success of the R8, basically because its FWD lay-out made it far less entertaining to drive. Production lasted only three years, number are not known
Here is an example shown at the Zolder Renault Alpine meet in 2004. Note the funny exhaust.
