    Triumph TR8

Generally seen as one of the greater disappointments in British car construction industry, the Triumph TR7 was presented in 1975 as the successor to the TR6. The difference in shape was significant and not to everybody’s liking to put it mildly. Objectively though there was not much wrong with the car, apart may be from the fact that the 4 cylinder 2 litre engine only produced 106 BHP, nothing compared to what the TR6’ six cylinder 2.5 litre was capable off. Ride comfort had improved considerably.

Rumours about more powerful versions started to circulate quite early, but the available alternative was the V8 from the Stag, which did not have a good reputation for reliability. The solution was finally found in the engine that had made such an impact on various British constructors, i.e. the Rover/Buick alloy V8. The car fitted with that engine finally appeared in 1980, and was destined for the American market only. The only version available was the Roadster, but a proper hardtop could be had as well. Some TR8 were converted into potent rallye cars and some even were used as track cars.

As the TR8 the car had 135 BHP and could reach 190 kph, still not very impressive. Production lasted only for 2 years and almost 2500 cars were made.

Shown is a car that participated in the Spa Historics in 2003.
