Are you more comfortable with a manual or an automatic? Have you had much experience in cars with with manual transmitions? Be honest answering these two questions and you'll choose the right one.

Thanks to everyone who's leant me their little nugget of information I'm very greatful

to clear a couple of things up of the questions you've asked me....

I learnt in a manual and passed in november, just losing confidence in my ability as time goes on until i get into a car again. im generally a good driver (passed first time after 30 hours worth of lessons with 5 minors....thats ok isnt it!??) I know in time it will become second nature, it's just before you get there you're left wondering....'when will this happen!?!'

Im not a student but am 21 so i guess am the age of a student, need a cost efficient and reliable car as saving up for what im trying to do with the rest of my life!

And i live on the outskirts of london so can be stuck in quite a lot of traffic. I'm actually pretty confident of my clutch control and the such in heavy traffic as i learnt in it.
I think my major headache is the price and what would be better value for money.....(im starting to think auto thanks to you guys ) but the only thing niggling me about that is whether im confident enough in a manual even though i should be as i passed in one.....i did tend to flap a bit at busy roundabouts........i guess i just need confidence and time!!!

Anyway thanks again

Go for the manual

Safer
Cheaper
More Economical (better MPG)
Faster
Lighter
AND MUCH MORE FUN!!!

Get the manual. If will help you get plenty of experience with the manual transmission soon.Driving an auto is really simple, the manual too actually lol. anyway, get the manual and get the experience.im sure you will grow much more confident after driving around a while. good luck with your choice.

Safer? I'm not sure about that, but I agree with the rest (actually, in some cars strangely the fuel economy of autos is indicatively better)

A manual will stay where it is in idle, and it is much more difficult to engage erroneously...

But of course, an inexperienced manual driver is undoubtedly less safe than they would be in an automatic due to the risk of stalling, mis-shifting, jerkiness and the additional concentration required. But of course, that'll decrease with time I suppose.

You're right, but the danger is exacerbated when an incapable driver has a manual in his control (rather, OUT of his control ) rather than an automatic. I agree with you though.

by safer I meant that having more control you could choose the ratio to suit the situation (this is not as hard as it sounds!!) for stuff like going up steep hills going down steep hills, and especially overtaking!!! to many times have I seen an automatic pull out to overtake, floor the throttle, and have to pull back in lane before a truck hits them!!!

Hah! a funny memory came to mind some guy in a brabus tuned Merc pulled out to overtake a van. I could hear the big motor roar and the exaust flared but his speed didn't change (infact if anything he coasted) A truck was coming the other way and just as he was pulling back into lane the transmission kicked in selected a lower gear and ran the Merc right into the back of the van!!!!

moral: automatics have an evil mind and the love to smash you into the backs of vans!

That's true, but only for that specific situation. In general however, I think automatics would be unanimously perceived as safer.

The Manual is the way to go, an automatic will probably just irritate you.

The main problem with an auto is that a cheap pooey auto will cause you far more problems than a cheap pooey manual 'box. There's a chance it could shuffle around gears when you're around town when it should just stick to second or third and, as someone mentioned, you lose control of your car (to a certain extent) in certain situations.

Also, I wouldn't buy a cheap car with Sat-Nav because the chances are an expensive extra like that will end up being dog-shite - corners cut to make it available to those of us with a low budget. Same thing with an auto gearbox i reckon.
