Once it was airborne it was fine because the plane expanded as friction with the atmosphere warmed it up.

They didn't have the same rubber/plastic technology as we do today for the seal....remember this thing was still designed back in the 50s....the fact that it was made of titanium and whatnot was remarkable enough...

That's true. Plus it's an amazing looking plane. Maybe it should be in a museum for art. It looks really sleek. From an engineering standpoint, it's a modern marvel.

but then again all 20 were taken out of service at 1995 and only three where brought back at 1999 because they realised there is not moderen replacement for it. so im not sure how much retro fitting these got...
