The Torino 2006 thread

This is the official thread for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. The games will be held from 10-22 february.

In this thread you can discuss what you'll be watching, already watched and it will feature some important results.

Tonight will be the opening ceremony at 8pm CET. The Ceremonies involves choreographers, directors, costume designers and international professionals; they will also involve a choreographed exhibition on skates called Sparks of Passion, in which eight ice hockey athletes will race at 50 km/h inside the Stadio Olimpico. The uniqueness of this exhibition is also guaranteed due to the Sparks of Passion, generating red flames 2 metres long.

The Olympic ceremonies will be followed by 35 thousand spectators at the Stadio Olimpico and by approximately 2 billion television spectators the world wide.

Torino 2006 in numbers
  • 17 days of competitions: from February 10th to 26th, 2006
  • 15 disciplines: Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Nordic Combined, Curling, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Ski Jumping, Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Short Track Speed Skatin, Skeleton, Luge, Snowboard
  • 7 Competition Sites:Torino, Bardonecchia, Cesana, Pinerolo, Pragelato, Sauze d'Oulx, Sestriere
  • 3 Olympic Villages: Torino, Bardonecchia and Sestriere
  • 84 titles at stake
  • 80 National Olympic Committees
  • 2,500 athletes
  • 2,500 coaches and national team officials
  • 2,300 representatives of the IOC, National Olympic Committees and Federations
  • 650 judges and referees
  • 10,000 media
  • 6,000 guests of sponsors
  • 1 million spectators at events
