Smokey, but quick, the 3 cylinder 2-stroke chucks out nearly as much power as one would expect from a V6 4-stroke of the same era. Which makes perfect sense, if you think about it!

    Enjoy.

In race spec the 1000 cc engine produced 66 kw, which gave the car a topspeed of 200 kph. There for also a 1200 cc version for even more serious racing.
A ladder frame chassis was used, combined with a fibreglass body. Two rollbars were used, one integrated in the windshield frame, and the other behind the driver.

    Just over 100 were made.

Only 80 survive to this day.
A continuation of 15 cars built to 70's spec has been commissioned, I wonder what the price will be. You will have to check out the Melkus website http://www.melkus-sportwagen.de/die-...t/de/index.php for that, but better brush up on your German. It looks the part and will probably cost you an arm and a leg (as is often the case with continuation series).

IIRC, I read somewhere they would be around £30,000.

This a really beautiful classic car (I love those doors ) I'm impressed with the performance figures as well, especially the top speed.

Good that in the continuation series, they maintain the two-stroke engine. Might be problematic to get the emissions under control, but they may have done it.

The cars will be built to 1970's standards, so I guess they don't have to take the emissions into account. Mind you, they have always had the 15 chassis numbers available. This probably implies they can build a car just as they did back then. Similarly, Aston Martin recreated a batch of DB4GT Zagatoes in the early 90's.
Even though it's a good-looking car (and probably great fun to drive) I think it's price is quite high. English specialist sports car manufacturers are often more competitive.
The top speed really is impressive, that's where the slippery body and light weight come into play.

It's expensive, but I think the units will be sold more on nostalgia rather than outright perfomance. Furthermore they are preparing a modern RS2000 to follow this batch of 15 RS1000 classics.
