One of the real odd Matra products was the Rancho. Outwardly looking like a strong 4x4, it really was a Simca 1100 chassis, with front wheel drive only, but fitted with the 1442 cc engine also used in the Simca 1308. Reinforcement of the body was not one of the primary design objectives, and it could hardly be used other than as break or a small van. Surprisingly over a 7 year production period 56,457 left the factory.
Rust prevention was also not a priority, and very few remain. The guide from which I am now quoting also suggests to take a welding course when you consider to acquire one.
Shown here is one that appeared during the Autovisie Concours at Paleis Het Loo held in 2006. Theme of the concours was “delivery” and as such the car was at the right place. This is actually a Grand Raid version from 1980, which had additional bottom protection plates, special lights, terrain tyres and a winch. It still was not an offroader though…..
