    Studebaker President 1956

The designation President had been used by Studebaker for pre-war top model cars and lasted until 1942. It was revived in 1955 when a Champion and Commander look-alike car was first shown. It had a much better equipment though and also a more powerful V8 engine.
The 1956 version had a totally revised body and the engine size had increased from 4.2 to 4.7 litres. This engine now produced a healthy 210 SAE BHP and the heavy car could reach 175 kph.

The new President range only lasted until 1958 and the only larger Studebaker that remained in production was the Hawk as all efforts were concentrated on new Lark, the compact car, that was to engage the Corvair, the Valiant and the Falcon.

Eventually the 1955 version was the most popular with 23644 units produced. The next generation only managed 32397 cars over a three year period.

Shown is a mint but unrestored 1956 example, that participated in the Autovisie Classic American Concours, held at Palace Het Loo in September 2006. It is the Classic version, recognisable by the white band along the body.
