    Ford Lotus Cortina Mk2

Although produced in greater numbers than the Mk1, the Mk2 is virtually unknown to the general public, as it was hardly engaged in racing activities. The Mk2 Cortina was presented in 1967 and sported a totally new body style, which was heavier as well. It became available as 1300 and 1500 as well as a 1500 GT. This version was upgraded to 1600 cc in 1968, giving 86 BHP. A later version was the more luxurious 2000E.

The ultimate version was still the Lotus Cortina, but the Twin Cam engine remained the same and was still officially producing 105 BHP using twin Webers and a higher compression ration than the OHV 1600 cc engine. The official career of the Lotus Cortina Mk2 was cut short by a decision to replace the Lotus badge by a Twin-Cam logo, only 7 months after production start. However as Twin Cam the car remained in production until 1970 and 4032 units were made.

Shown here is one car in the traditional colours, which was brought to the Lotus Cortina Club area during the Silverstone Historics of 2006.

    Great pics henk!
Isn't the correct name Cortina Lotus MkII?
The reason, I believe, is that the influence of lotus is alot less than on the MkI. Iirc it's not much, besides the engien, that comes from the clever brains of Lotus

that could well be, I am sure it did not use the same rear axle as in the mk1, it used parts supplied by Lotus, but was assembled by Ford. Hence the car never received an official Lotus type number, contrary to the Mk1, which is actually the Lotus 28.
Another correction, it was only briefly engaged in racing activities, but still very successfull, in 1968, the lighter Escort TC did the rest...

What axel was used in the MkII then? Not enhanced Ford english axel as in the MkI ? the original used in escorts did not have four-link and the y-split enhancment thing i can't put a name on right now
Here is a pic of the MKI axel..

EDIT: now I saw your edit and that was the same as thought Parts from Lotus, assembled by Ford..
Didn't know that the MkI Lotus Cortina was given a number though!! Thanks for that info!

I think it used the standard Mk2 rear axle, semi elliptic leaf springs...but I am ready to stand corrected.

    Ok...
Could not find any speciffic on the MkII rear axel yet..
But however I found out that the MkI had two differente axel setups mounted..

" The first Lotus-Cortinas had a single-piece propeller shaft, and a back axle with coil springs and located by radius arms and an A-bracket linked to a light alloy differential housing, and used a 3.90:1 final drive ratio. This setup placed excessive load on the differential housing, and the retaining bolts tended to come loose, which caused oil to drain out of the axle, destroying the diff, and with the leaking oil doing similar to the suspension bushes, causing surprise collapses. It also transmitted mysterious thumps and clunks into the cabin. In July '64 the light alloy diff housing became optional, and a two-piece propeller shaft was introduced. In June '65 the entire rear suspension was replaced by the setup used in the Cortina and Corsair GTs, half-elliptic leaf springs and twin radius arms. This setup proved to be far more durable, and nobody really noticed the difference anyway."

Credits to "The Ford Cortina Website" :Link...
    Great Cortina site btw...

Maybe they used the later one of these two in the MKII?

    - the Mk II used the same axel as the Mk I from -65 onwards ; - the English axel with 2-link set up and leaf springs. ( The Mk II "Lotus" was litterally a GT with TwinCam !) Although the Mk II never made it quite as the Mk I on the tracks, I do believe they were succesfully campaigned by Team Lotus in -67/68 running fuel injected Cosworth FVA engines in, - I believe -, Group 5 racing. This was only for a short periode, until we saw the great Alan Mann Escorts ....!!
( Just to be an old prick ; - the Cortina was the "1600E" , - the 2000E was the Corsair....)

Welcome to UCP and thanks for that update, and the correction about the 2000E.

(and just to be an equally old prick, the MkIII Cortina did come as a 2000E...)
