    Toyota Auris (E150) 2007-2012

    Toyota Auris European Debut

The new Toyota Auris makes its European debut this week at the Bologna motor show in Italy, ahead of UK sales starting on 1 February next year. Designed and built in Europe, the new C-segment family hatchback marks significant advances in dynamic ability, interior style and practicality and safety.

The unveiling of the production model follows the presentation of Toyota’s Auris Space Concept at the Paris motor show earlier this year. Full details of UK specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the model’s on-sale date.

    New Chassis

Auris is built on an all-new platform and is larger in every dimension than the Toyota Corolla. A special focus on reducing NVH characteristics make it one of the quietest cars in its class, with strengthening of the underbody reducing boom and road noise and efficient aerodynamics cutting the level of wind noise.

    Suspension And Steering

New suspension systems have been developed for the Auris with an L-arm MacPherson strut arrangement at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.

In line with its position as the performance flagship of the range, the Auris D-4D 180 makes exclusive use of a new double wishbone rear suspension and rear anti-roll bar for more dynamic driving character.

All versions of the Auris adopt Electric Power Steering (EPS), giving excellent response to driver inputs.

    Interior Design

As witnessed in the Auris Space Concept, the designers have worked from the inside out, in order to make best use of the space available for storage points and passenger comfort. A key feature of their innovative approach is a striking bridge-shaped console that raises the gear lever higher on the dashboard, closer to the driver, and integrates the handbrake, creating more open space below.

Auris also adopts Toyota’s EasyFlat system that allows simple one-touch folding of the rear seats to create a larger, flat-floored load area. Boot capacity is 354 litres and the 10 storage areas around the cabin have a combined capacity of 32 litres.

Comfort for rear seat passengers is increased thanks to a larger couple distance between the front and rear seats than in the Corolla, giving extra legroom. Head and shoulder room are also better, due to the Auris’s greater cabin height. Clever design has also eliminated the tunnel carrying the exhaust system, giving a flat rear floor and thus more comfortable accommodation for any centre rear seat passenger.

    Safety

The strong body structure uses Toyota’s MICS (Minimum Intrusion Cabin System) to provide effective challenging and absorption of impact forces away from the passenger cell in the event of an impact.

Up to nine airbags will be fitted, with a driver’s knee airbag provided as standard – a first-in-class feature. Active safety elements on all versions include ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), with higher grade models additionally equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) systems.

    Engines And Transmissions

Auris will be launched with a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines, with outputs ranging from 89bhp (90 DIN hp) for the 1.4-litre D-4D 90 to 175bhp (177 DIN hp) for the
    2.2-litre D-4D 180.

The D-4D 180, already a star performer in the Avensis, RAV4 and Verso, endows Auris with a strong mixture of power, fuel efficiency and low emissions. Using Toyota’s D-CAT clean diesel technology, it achieves unmatched low levels of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, far below the levels set by Euro IV. Preliminary performance data show nought to 62mph acceleration takes 6.2 seconds and combined cycle fuel consumption is 45.6mpg.

New name for a new era

    • Noble qualities of gold – Aurum
“Creating a new name for the new car was a key priority for us,” explains Andrea Formica, Toyota Europe, Senior Vice President for Sales, Marketing and After-Sales. “In order to achieve our step change in volume growth in Europe, we needed to change people’s perceptions of our C-segment hatchback”.
“We believe we have succeeded. The different clinics we have conducted showed an enthusiastic reaction across the markets. The main spontaneous reactions from people were the words: futuristic, high class and attractive. These words perfectly match our brand DNA.”

The name has a resonance with other Toyota models, Yaris and Avensis, while suggesting the precious value of one of nature’s most classic and noble commodities, gold.

Auris will be built in Europe, emphasising Toyota’s commitment to its European production base with the very highest quality standard under the global label ‘Made by Toyota’. The new hatchback will be built alongside Avensis at TMUK in Great Britain and alongside Corolla Verso at TMMT in Turkey.

    Standing out from the crowd

    • Designed in Europe to meet European tastes
    • Distinctive hatchback, short and tall
Auris breaks the mould of current C-segment hatchback design. It has an original and distinctive shape that is ‘short and tall’. Short because it maintains an overall length typical to this segment; tall to maximise interior space and passenger comfort.

Auris also expresses sportiness. This effect is achieved by the wide tread – and emphasised by bringing the base of the A-pillar forward. The forward balance of the cabin architecture creates a sense of dynamism and agility, the designers call this “perfect imbalance”.

“The two main purchase reasons when buying a C-segment car in Europe are durability and exterior appeal,” says Andrea Formica, Toyota Motor Europe, Senior Vice President. “With Auris we will satisfy these customer needs; thanks to Toyota’s legendary superior product quality and this distinctive design. This car won’t appeal only to the heart, it will also to the mind.”
Auris was created at Toyota’s European Design Development centre (ED2) in southern France. Its dynamic form reflects European taste, style and sophistication.

Key elements are the muscular shape and the bold dynamic lines. Auris creates its distinctive form with a broad width (1,760 mm) and a tall height (1,515 mm). Overall length is 4,220 mm, in combination with a wide front and rear track (1,524 mm and 1,522 mm respectively).

Short overhangs (890 mm front, 730 mm rear) within a long wheelbase (2,600 mm) and a low centre of gravity create a dynamic side silhouette that promises engaging driving performance. This is emphasised through the rising belt-line and strong, forward tilted rear pillar and rear window.

The flared wheel arches are prominent, adding to the sense of width, and the large tyres (the option of 15”, 16” or 17” wheel sizes) fill the arches to project a sporty image. Meanwhile, the body surfaces are fresh and clean with strong character lines to portray emotion in movement. This particularly true of the three-door where the sports driving performance is emphasised in the stretched belt-line graphics and rear pillar shape.

The bonnet, deep bumper and broad wings are all one form, centred on the Toyota symbol mark. The graphics of the radiator grille maintain and further enhance the tradition of the Toyota brand identity.

Detailing adds character and projects a premium image. The sharply angled bumper and the prominent headlamps wrap around to the side in a flowing form, further reducing the sense of overhang.

The rugged theme is carried back to the rear. The rounded shapes again emphasise the flared wheel arches while the width creates a low centre of gravity. The rear hatch is wide, suggesting practicality as well as strength, and the combination lamps flow along the sides to reflect the frontal styling.
Nine bright exterior colours will complement the distinctive Auris style. One is entirely new and four are new to Toyota’s C-segment product range.

    Bold, spacious interior

    • Innovative “inside-out” design approach
    • Bold bridged centre console
    • Great sense of space and light
    • Superior quality and comfort

Auris sets a new standard for interior design: stylish, spacious and sophisticated.

The “inside-out” approach with the car created around the driver creates maximum interior space. The styling with unique design elements, such as the bridged centre console, creates a bold and distinctive environment.

At the same time Auris is practical – with excellent cargo space and Toyota’s unique ‘Easy-Flat system’ seating (adopted from the current Corolla Verso) which allows one-touch folding of the rear seats to create an instantly enlarged loading area.

First impressions count. The bridged centre console makes a clear statement that symbolises the sporty character of the car. Yet the clear space beneath the console also adds to the sense of roominess.

The console enhances excellent ergonomics. The short, direct gear shift lever is moved closer to the natural position for the driver and the parking brake lever is elegantly integrated into the design. The overall effect is to create a driving cockpit with all major controls at your fingertips.

The strong sporty image is carried over into other elements of the design. Front seats are body hugging with a firm shoulder area, long seat cushion and firm side supports. The three-spoke steering wheel is robust with a thick gripping surface and characterful centre padding. Main meters are Optitron-design with three-dimensional layered display.

Space and comfort are here too. Front and rear seat passengers enjoy excellent head and shoulder room, thanks to the tall design. The couple distance (between front and rear seat) has been stretched to 910mm resulting in excellent legroom while the steering position has been moved backwards to create a more natural driving environment.

Ample legroom is available for rear passengers because the floor tunnel has been eliminated to create a low, flat design. The rear seats, which can also split 60:40, fold down using the Toyota Easy-Flat system.

Interior trim reflects the superior quality – with attention to detail in all elements of touch, see and sense. Two interior colours, modern dark grey and warm greige, will be available. Fabrics have a soft touch; door trim is sculpted to create space; door furniture is integrated with the handle and grip as one unit; panel fit and finish is precise.

Storage space is excellent, reflecting the practical, family usage that Auris owners will enjoy. Trunk capacity is 354 litres (with a space-saver tyre) and there are 10 storage areas around the passenger cabin, offering a total storage volume of 32 litres.

    Engaging driving pleasure

    • Driving performance exceeds expectation
    • Flagship D-4D 180 Clean Power heads line-up
    • Full range of high-tech diesel and petrol engines
    • Choice of transmissions to match customers needs

Auris promises an engaging drive; it is an experience centred around the driver that begins the moment you sit in the driving seat.
Yoshihiko Kanamori, Auris Chief Engineer, notes: “We took great care of delivering excellent driving pleasure to match the high expectations from customers’ visual appeal.”

So Auris not only looks the part; it delivers. The four grade model line-up needs to appeal across a broad spectrum of customers and Auris offers plenty of choice: three-door or five-door, three diesel engines, two petrol engines, three transmissions.

Flagship of the range is the D-4D 180 Clean Power. This model offers stunning performance and summarises the Auris driving experience.
The 2.2-litre D-4D has already made its mark in Toyota Avensis, Corolla Verso and RAV4 models. Here, in Auris, it develops 130 kW (177 hp DIN) at 3,600 rpm and a massive 400 Nm of torque across 2,000 to 2,600 rpm – ensuring Auris has excellent pulling power under all driving conditions.

The D-4D 180 Clean Power is not only powerful, but clean – making it one of the cleanest engines available on the market today. Equipped with Toyota D-CAT technology, its advanced exhaust gas cleaning system reduces Hydrocarbons (HC) + Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Particular Matter (PM) emissions.

Auris D-4D 180 Clean Power will be available with a six-speed manual transmission, matched and designed to optimise its excellent torque characteristics. It will also be fitted exclusively with newly developed, double wishbone rear suspension and rear anti-roll bar to allow owners to fully enjoy the performance available from this flagship model.

At the heart of the Auris range will be two other advanced diesel engines, the punchy 1.4-litre D-4D and the smooth 2.0-litre D-4D. Diesel is expected to account for more than half the sales of Auris.

The 1.4 D-4D develops 66 kW (90 hp DIN) at 3,800 rpm and 190 Nm of torque from 1,800 rpm to 3,000 rpm. This wide torque range makes the D-4D 90 ideal for city driving and its outstanding economy ensures it is a popular choice.
The 2.0 D-4D has been developed from the lightweight 2.2-litre range and develops 93 kW (126 hp DIN) at 3,600rpm. Maximum torque is 300 Nm across 2,000 to 2,800 rpm range when fitted with Oxydation Catalytic converter (300/1,800-2,400 with Diesel Particulate Filter). In real world driving the D-4D 125 is powerful and smooth, offering an excellent balance of lively performance and low fuel consumption.

Auris D-4D 125 will be available with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which not only strictly reduces Hydrocarbons (HC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) like conventional catalysts but also enable simultaneous reduction of particulate matter. The DPF is ‘self-cleaning’ and requires no long-term maintenance.
An all-new high performance Toyota petrol engine is introduced with Auris: the 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i. The dual VVT-i technology continually adjusts both the intake and exhaust valve timing of the engine to ensure maximum efficiency under all operating conditions. The newly adopted roller rocker arm system substantially reduces friction between the camshaft and sliding parts, contributing to enhance fuel economy.

This results in significantly increased torque at low and medium engine speeds with increased power output at higher speeds. At the same time, it enhances fuel consumption and reduces emissions. Maximum power output is 91 kW (124 hp DIN) at 6,000rpm while the dual VVT-i technology ensures a remarkably constant torque output for a petrol engine, peaking at 157 Nm at 5,200rpm.
The engine line-up is complemented by a 1.4-litre VVT-i petrol with 71 kW (97 hp DIN) output and 130 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. This engine offers excellent fuel economy and quiet, smooth city driving.

All engines in Auris comply with Euro IV emissions standards.

Transmissions for Auris have been carefully selected to match engine output and characteristics, ensuring optimum performance and driving pleasure. A five-speed manual gearbox will be available across most models in the range – with a compact, six speed manual available on D-4D 180 and D-4D 125 models.

    2007 Toyota Auris #2
Toyota’s advanced MultiMode transmission with paddle shifts will be optional with 1.4 D-4D and the new 1.6 Dual VVT-i petrol engines. The transmission offers drivers the alternative of automatic or manual driving mode.

Superior handling and stability is achieved across the range with optimised suspension and steering. A newly developed, L-arm MacPherson strut front suspension ensures excellent stability and steering control while carefully isolating from road noise and vibration.

The rear suspension (except on D-4D 180 Clean Power) is a newly developed torsion beam which accommodates the vehicle packaging while also offering superior handling and ride comfort.

Precise and sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) has been fitted to ensure excellent response and reaction to driver input

    Superior ownership experience

    • Quality experience all around you
    • Quietest family hatchback available
    • Excellent safety specification
    • Low cost of ownership

Auris makes a clear statement of superior quality in design, style, driving experience and ownership.

“We paid attention to every detail starting from the driving position to the chassis to ensure ultimate driving performance” says Yoshihiko Kanamori, Auris Chief Engineer.

“Noise, vibration and harshness plays an important role in this. From the beginning we made sure the vehicle structure provided a good base to reduce noise in the cabin.”

Auris is one of the quietest cars in the C-segment hatchback, boom and road noise are reduced significantly with underbody strengthening. Excellent aerodynamics also mean less wind noise providing a silent and relaxed environment in the cabin.

The strong body structure, developed under the principles of MICS (Minimum Intrusion Cabin System) contributes to excellent passive safety too. Crash Energy Management distributes any impact energy away from the passenger cell.

Auris will be available with up-to nine airbags and a driver knee airbag is standard – a first for this class of car. Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is standard. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and traction control (TRC) are either standard or optional depending on the market. Thanks to the addition of safety features, Toyota expects to achieve a top class rating in Euro-NCAP tests
Top class ranking is expected as far as cost of ownership is concerned with low insurance ratings, excellent fuel consumption and highly competitive maintenance.

Styling wise I don't like it, it has no chance with the heavyweights in the segment. However the 1.6-litre engine seems to be a very good unit.

The Auris HSD drives like no other car in its class. It is equipped with the first and only full hybrid powertrain in the C-segment. Its introduction will create an important shift in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology.

The advantages of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions are obvious. However, the Auris HSD customer will also experience a smooth and sophisticated, relaxed and stress-free driving experience thanks to the everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness of Toyota’s multiple award-winning powertrain.

Named International Engine of the Year in 2004, Green Engine of the Year and Best Fuel Economy Engine of the Year for the fifth consecutive year in 2008, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® represents the ultimate synergy of high technology and environmentally-conscientious forward thinking in powertrain design.

The Unrivalled Efficiency Of Toyota’s Full Hybrid Technology

Unlike rival, mild hybrid vehicles, the new Auris HSD is a full hybrid capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both. Its advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive® system delivers the energy-saving benefits of a series hybrid combined with the performance benefits of a parallel hybrid.

Full hybrid technology equips the new Toyota hatchback with instant power, impressive, seamless acceleration and remarkably quiet operation, yet returns class-leading fuel efficiency and the lowest possible emissions.

In combination, the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system’s 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum power output of 136 DIN hp, equipping the Auris HSD with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 11.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 180 km/h – performance to match any conventional 2.0 litre diesel or petrol hatchback.

Conversely, the Auris full hybrid returns fuel consumption figures of only 3.8 l/100 km in the European homologation combined cycle and targets remarkably low, highly tax-efficient CO2 emissions of just 89 g/km. In addition, the Auris HSD generates significantly lower NOX and PM emissions than diesel engined cars of comparable performance.

Moreover, when operating in a unique, switchable EV mode, the Auris HSD offers zero CO2, NOX and PM emissions, driving for up to about two kilometres at speeds of up to about 50 km/h, dependant on battery charge and driving conditions.

    Hybrid Synergy Drive® system architecture

The Auris HSD’s latest generation series/parallel full hybrid system features a 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine, a powerful electric motor, a generator, a high performance battery, a power control unit and a power split device which employs a planetary gear set to combine and re-allocate power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to operational requirements.

Key to the successful installation of Hybrid Synergy Drive® within the Auris HSD’s front-engined hatchback platform, the electric motor, generator and power split device are all housed in one lightweight, highly compact transmission casing directly comparable in size to that of a conventional gearbox.

The full hybrid drive system’s seamless, E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission is controlled by Shift-by-Wire technology, using an electric shift lever system.

Powered by the hybrid battery, the electric motor works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration during normal driving. Unique to Toyota’s full hybrid drive technology, the electric motor alone powers the driven wheels when the Auris HSD is operating in EV mode.

During deceleration and under braking, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator to effect regenerative braking. Normally wasted as heat, kinetic energy is recovered as electrical energy for storage in the high performance battery.

    1.8 Litre Atkinson Cycle Engine

The lightweight, highly compact, 4-cylinder 1798 cc Atkinson cycle petrol engine develops max output of 73 kw/99 DIN hp at 5200 rpm and max torque of 142 Nm at 4000 rpm.

Combined with a cooling Exhaust Gas Recirculation system, the adoption of the Atkinson cycle offers significant gains in fuel efficiency and the reduction of emissions.

Because the intake valves close late in an Atkinson Cycle engine, compression is delayed. This creates a high expansion ratio for less compression, reducing intake and exhaust energy losses and converting combustion energy to engine power more effectively. As a result, the exhaust temperature is lower than that of conventional engines. The cooling Exhaust Gas Recirculation system reduces cooling loss and pumping loss and consequently fuel efficiency is enhanced. Heat tolerant catalyst adoption is mostly contributing to reduction of enrichment.

The 1.8 litre engine features numerous further enhancements to both improve performance and help minimise fuel consumption and emissions. VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) helps boost response levels across the entire rev range by varying the air-fuel intake and exhaust valve timing to suit the conditions at any given time. As well as improving torque at low and medium engine speeds, the system also reduces emissions and enhances fuel efficiency.

In addition, the engine features roller rocker arm valve-train control, a resin intake manifold with an optimised port configuration and 12-hole, atomising, long nozzle injectors. Thin, long reach spark plugs contribute to enhanced anti-knocking performance, and low tension piston rings, reduced piston friction, a standing oil jet for piston cooling and a stainless steel pipe exhaust manifold further enhance engine efficiency. In combination, these advanced technologies contribute to improved power output with reductions in both fuel consumption and emissions.

Ultra-low Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) characteristics are one of the key attributes of Hybrid Synergy Drive® and particular attention has been paid to minimising engine noise and vibration. The rigidity of engine parts including the cylinder block and crank case has been optimised through in-depth Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) analysis. A highly rigid, ribbed aluminium cylinder head cover combines light weight with reduced noise and vibration.

The engine itself is mounted on a 4-point mounting system with mounting rubber characteristics optimised for the suppression of noise and vibration. And dynamic damper is integrated within the engine mount to further minimise noise and vibration, as well as reducing engine start/stop shock.

Hybrid Transaxle with Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT)
Housing the electric motor, generator, power split device and a reduction gear in one lightweight, highly compact transmission casing directly comparable in size to that of a conventional gearbox, the transaxle lies at the heart of the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system.

The full hybrid drive system’s seamless, E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission is controlled by Shift-by-Wire technology, using an electric shift lever system. The shift lever itself is designed to always return to its ‘home’ position when released and the shift position can be checked on the shift position indicator integrated within the driver’s instrument cluster.

Adjacent to the shift lever, a parking switch with integral indicator light is used to engage or release a parking lock mechanism within the transmission gearing. The parking lock is automatically deactivated when driving off and automatically re-engages when the car is switched off.

The transaxle features a multi-function gear train making it lightweight and highly compact. Numerous measures have been adopted to reduce component noise and drive shaft energy losses, lowering hybrid system fuel consumption. The world’s first internal tooth shaving process offers enhanced planetary ring gear precision, minimising transmission noise. The lubrication system has been designed to reduce stirring and the use of ball bearings minimises transaxle component friction.

    Electric Motor/Generator

The high performance, permanent magnet, synchronous electric motor/generator has a maximum power output of 60 kW. It works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration and power the driven wheels alone when the Auris HSD is operating in EV mode.

Generating instant power and a maximum 207 Nm of torque the motor is six times more powerful than that of rival, mild hybrid systems. It is air cooled and maximum drive voltage amplification is 650 Vdc. However, under ordinary driving conditions, unless maximum output is required, the motor is driven at an unamplified voltage whenever possible to enhance fuel efficiency.

    High Output Battery

The battery pack uses proven and reliable nickel-metal hydride technology. It is located beneath the rear loadspace floor, minimising impact on cabin accommodation and giving the Auris HSD a luggage capacity of 279 litres.

    Power Control Unit

Similar in size to a 12 volt battery, the Hybrid Synergy Drive® power control unit (PCU) consists of a voltage boost converter, an inverter and a DC/DC converter, controlled by a motor control ECU which receives commands from the hybrid vehicle control ECU.

The inverter converts the battery’s direct current into a 650 volt alternating current to drive the electric motor and occasionally, the generator, offering significantly improved PCU performance.

A conventional, non-hybrid vehicle is equipped with an alternator to charge the auxiliary battery. However, because an alternator cannot operate during engine cut-off driving mode, a full hybrid vehicle requires an alternative system. Hybrid Synergy Drive® incorporates a DC/DC converter to reduce the high voltage of the 202 V system battery pack to 14 V, supplying power to the accessory systems and charging the auxiliary battery.

    Hybrid Synergy Drive® In Operation

Over the course of any journey, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® system operates in several different modes to maximise the Auris HSD’s overall efficiency.

At rest, the engine stops automatically to conserve fuel. Under operating conditions of low engine efficiency such as start up and low to mid-range speeds, the vehicle automatically runs in EV mode, on the electric motor alone, thus eliminating CO2, NOX and PM emissions.

Under normal driving conditions, power allocation is constantly adjusted between engine and electric motor to combine optimum performance with maximum fuel efficiency.

Via an Electronically Controlled Braking System, the electric motor acts as high-output generator during deceleration and under braking to effect regenerative braking, optimising energy management in the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system by recovering kinetic energy (normally wasted as heat under braking and deceleration) as electrical energy for storage in the high performance battery.

Battery power level is constantly managed via an engine driven generator to obviate any requirement to recharge the system from an external source.

Three on-demand Driving Modes - A Unique Eco Driving Experience

Supplementing the NORMAL drive mode, three alternative, ‘on-demand’ drive modes – EV, ECO and POWER - may be selected to further increase driving efficiency, performance and fuel economy.

From start up and at speeds of less than 50 km/h with the NORMAL drive mode selected, the new Auris HSD automatically operates in EV mode depending on driving conditions and battery charge, driving under electric motor power alone to give instant power and an extraordinarily smooth, quiet ride with minimal NVH. This unique driving mode is not available to drivers of mild hybrid vehicles, requiring the full hybrid technology of Hybrid Synergy Drive®.

Though the petrol engine will still start if the system judges that its output is necessary, the switchable EV mode allows for significantly greater throttle inputs without engine start up. Hence, with vehicle range dictated by battery charge, the EV drive mode allows for urban driving with minimal noise and zero CO2, NOX and PM emissions for up to two kilometres. Because the use of only light to medium throttle inputs keeps the petrol engine switched off throughout its operation, the EV drive mode contributes to a significant reduction in the new Auris HSD’s overall fuel consumption.

In ECO mode, throttle response to aggressive accelerator pedal inputs is reduced and air-conditioning control optimized for improved fuel economy.

A POWER mode also modifies the response of the Auris HSD to throttle inputs, here boosting power to improve acceleration and enhance driving pleasure. The POWER mode provides a 25% higher throttle response to accelerator pedal input.

Complimenting these three on-demand drive modes, an Eco Drive Monitor helps drivers maximise the fuel efficiency of Toyota’s full hybrid powertrain. Via the multi-information indicator in the instrument cluster, drivers may monitor the flow of energy within the Hybrid Synergy Drive® system for each driving mode. This helps them develop relaxed, fuel efficient driving techniques and maximise system efficiency.

In addition, a simple yet clear power consumption gauge in the combination meter shows how much power is being used or generated at any given time.

Comfortable, Ultra-Quiet Driving with low NVH level

The Auris HSD brings the extraordinarily refined, smooth and silent Hybrid Synergy Drive® experience to European C-segment customers for the first time.

In order to maximise the unique benefits of Toyota’s full hybrid drive system, the Auris HSD features numerous body, chassis, suspension and steering modifications to the recently launched Auris 2010 model range.

    HSD Adapted Bodyshell

The centre floor body of the Auris HSD has been redesigned to accommodate the Hybrid Synergy Drive® battery pack, which is located beneath the rear loadspace floor. Minimising impact on cabin accommodation, this gives the new Toyota full hybrid a luggage capacity of 279 litres.

    Tuned Suspension

Through collaboration between the Japanese R & D suspension design team and Toyota’s European R & D conformity testing team, the Auris HSD’s ride and handling has been fine-tuned specifically for the customers and roads of the European market. It combines stable high speed driving performance with secure handling and superior ride comfort.

The front suspension features a variation of the highly effective MacPherson strut, known as an L-arm MacPherson strut. This compact and highly rigid design brings the strut in-board from the wheel hub, which allows for a wider track with superior stability and excellent noise and vibration suppression.

The rear suspension benefits from a highly efficient torsion beam system featuring a separate spring and damper layout, creating a super-compact design which does not intrude into the vehicle’s loadspace.

Compensating for a change in weight distribution effected by the installation of the hybrid battery pack to the rear, both the Auris HSD’s front and rear dampers have been tuned for optimum ride quality.

Lowered Chassis with Bespoke Wheels and Tyres

In conjunction with numerous aerodynamic bodywork details designed to maximise the fuel efficiency of the full hybrid drive system and minimise wind noise during high speed cruising, the Auris HSD’s ride height has been lowered by 5 mm to further enhance aerodynamic efficiency and high speed stability.

In addition, it has been equipped with unique, 15” or 17” Prius-style aero wheels with enlarged air gaps for improved cooling air flow to the Electronically Controlled Braking System and 195/65R 15 or 215/45R 17 low rolling resistance tyres (latest generation).

    Electronically Controlled Braking System

The Auris HSD’s full hybrid drive system incorporates an Electronically Controlled Braking System which coordinates the control of both hydraulic and regenerative braking and is 18% lighter and 31% smaller than conventional systems.

The system is equipped with ventilated disc brakes to the front -273 mm for 15” wheels and 296 mm for 17” wheels- and 259 mm solid discs to the rear for optimum braking efficiency. Coordinated control of the hydraulic and regenerative braking systems maximises the regeneration of energy by the electric motor during deceleration and under braking.

    Revised Electric Power Steering (EPS)

With a quick ratio of 14.44:1 and just 2.9 turns lock-to-lock, the Auris HSD’s speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) reduces hybrid system energy consumption for improved fuel economy.

The EPS’ compact, high output motor and torque sensor are built into the steering column, optimising steering assistance for more precise control of the vehicle. EPS improves fuel economy by consuming power only when steering force assistance is needed. It is highly durable and requires no hydraulic fluid.

Compensating for the change in weight distribution effected by the installation of the hybrid battery pack to the rear, as well as the re-tuned suspension, the Auris HSD’s EPS has also been revised to maintain optimum feedback and vehicle agility.

Low Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH)

Reinforcing the extensive Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) suppression measures inherent in the Auris HSD’s aerodynamic styling and ultra-quiet Hybrid Synergy Drive® system, particular attention has been paid to noise and vibration reduction within its highly rigid, impact absorbing body structure.

The engine is mounted on a 4-point system incorporating dynamic damper for maximum suppression of noise and vibration as well as reduced engine start/stop shock.

Road and engine noise have been rigorously suppressed through the comprehensive use of high-performance sound proofing materials throughout the engine and passenger compartments. An acoustic windscreen design further reduces wind noise for improved quietness at cruising speeds.

As a result, the new Toyota full hybrid sets the highest standards in Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) reduction, sound absorption and vibration damping. This ensures customers enjoy a cabin environment of unequalled calm and quietness at all vehicle speeds.
