There are no kids in my house; only myself and my mom.
She doesn't even know the rifle is in the house because one of my brothers used to own it and he gave it to me. It's in a closet behind a lot of things and in a cloth carrying case. Yes, the ammo is kept separate and in this house, being 2,618 sq. ft., it's easy to keep it well-hidden.

Incidentally, the rifle operates (fires) very nice for being about 60 years old. There's almost no kickback when firing, although the gun is kind of heavy. My brother restored it before giving it to me. It does need new ammo... what I have is over 5 years old.

Yes, they are.
Actually, I've barely looked at that website. There is so much to read on the Internet (look up my interests in my profile) that guns and such are pushed back to low priority.

i'd rather lock the kids in a cupboard, myself...
i actually can't remember where my ammo is. I'll have to look for it at some point; i have some air rifle pellets on my desk but don't know where my centrefire stuff is

Get a shotgun. The classic sound of a shotgun is probably enough to scare away anyone even if there aren't any bullets.
