Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (C197) 2010-
Edmunds Inside Line has a bit of a scoop today that the blogs have yet to pick up on - Benz has just released some specs for it's new supercar and the replacement for the SLR - the SLS AMG. To be released in 2010 as a 2011 MY, the SLS will feature a 563 hp / 470 lb.-ft. version of the 6.2L V8 dubbed M159 and will feature dry sump lubrication. This will be mated to a 7 speed dual clutch transaxle which will yield a weight distribution of 48:52.
The car will cost about 250K and also be gulwingy - it's supposedly gonna feature a ew aluminum construction technique to lower weight. The floorpan and body is made out of forged, cast, and sheet aluminum which sounds cool to me (but it's no carbon fibre). Enjoy the spyshots below. EDIT: Source with more info. |

I guess it was, but not any more apparently. I also thought it was gonna be developed with the company that makes their DTM cars but this article says some crap is gonna be done at Woking with McLaren. Maybe that's crap or maybe the previous rumour was crap.

The proportions on that car look very promising indeed.

This is a Mercedes not a McLaren right? Makes sense not to use carbon fibre since mass production for that stuff is always next to impossible(in any meaningful quantity)....

I'm a bit nervous about this one. I have low expectations for the different perspectives of this car, at least from the camoed car...

First, I can't believe I'm saying this, but isn't 563hp and 470lbs of torque . . . sort of meh? I mean an SL65 will eat it's lunch.
Second, I wonder if this is an actual duel clutch transmission or just another dolled up version of their seven speed automatic like in the new AMG SLs?

nothing wrong with the new AMG 7 speed, no torque converter, decent shift speed, and can handle the torque of all but the most ridiculous AMG motor....

You *shouldn't* need more than 500hp...

The second picture makes the car look kinda small. Is it small? Somehow reminds me of the Z4...

I believe some of those camouflage panels are from a Viper (relic from days past etc...), so I doubt small would be the right word. But, the fact that the proportions make you think that is definitely a good sign unless they completely screw it up on the way to production.

You don't need more than 400hp. Unless you're MB and you make roadsters that weight more than most SUVs. There was a capsule review of the 500SL a few years ago and they said that if you need more than this in terms of power or performance you should be looking at a 911 Cabrio.
