That, from what I understand, is the strongest part of the car.

If that bends, I doubt the accident is survivable in the first place.

What's the motive for all these companies to race GT3? It seems like they'd get more publicity if they stepped up to GT2 or 1 b/c then they'd go to Le Mans and Sebring.

has nothing to do with the doors, but with the fact that they have not and will produce enough cars to homologate it as a GT1. The car is ready, it is being used for demo runs with prospective customers for street models, but it will never race.

Potential failure. In GT2 there are factory teams spending money to win and competition is close and hard fought. The chances of winning are slim and if you enter a works car and don't win it could be seen as negative publicity.

In GT3 though, there are no works teams, at least from the big factories, and cars are campaigned by privateers. It doesn't matter if the car doesn't win because the factory wasn't directly involved. And on the other hand it's a perfect way to give your car racing pedigree on the cheap.

I knew it wasn't related to the doors, just gave it as extra info. What are the homologation requirements for GT1 cars by the way?

I was just reading this last night - let me see again.

From the LMS website:

The "Grand Touring" category features cars derived from models homologated for road use and which can be purchased. A minimum of 100 street legal samples must be built by the major car manufacturers and a minimum of 25 for the smaller makes. Easy identifiable by the public, the GTs deliver a top drawer level of popularity.

So pretty lax to be honest - 100 seems to me a small amount.
