How important is your "rep" to you?

I was just wondering, how important is the number of rep points to everyone here? Are there those among us that don't care what rep they have, or on the other hand, those who would do anything for a high rep count.

I appreciate the rep points I've been given. It tells me that someone thought my post was usefull, funny, helpfull, entertaining ect. How about you??

I dont think im obsessive about rep points, i like to get the positive feedback about my posts or just the general encouragement but i dont think that cause mines less then yours that its the worst thing ever and i have to have more More MORE!! the rep system is good, as long as its used properly

To me it is not that important other than the fact that by it I know that I am contributing something to these forums. Whether that be knowledge, a good arguement, a joke, etc. I as well just enjoy the positive feedback.

The misho ratio is inaccurate even Misho himself admitted this, in theory its a good sytem but i think there needs to be a minimum number of posts it can be applied to otherwise it gets screwed up. by the misho ratio im not doin too badly

Good timing on posting this thread, taz.

I'd responded to a comment by Karmann in another thread where he suggested rep for someone posting an eBay link.

So, WHAT do you think/want rep to "represent" ?

No matter what Wouter THINKS it's for, it's how it is used and applied that defines it's usefullness, interest or value.

So handing out rep in return for rep given to you means the rep system is about friendship.

Handing out rep for jokes means it's about humour.

Handout out rep for trawling other sites and posting pics means it's for 'effort' - of varying amounts dependant on the level of plagiarism.

Rep for arguing a point on a constructive, collaborative manner means it's for the points made and the style of communication

Now, if we say it's ALL of those, then what value does rep have ?
The olympics don't have one gold medal for one athlete.
Each 'sport' has it's own competition and it's own medals.
Personally I think UCP rep mirrors that. So rep is about CAR-related stuff in the main. So IN THE MAIN, rep shoudl be handed out for contribution to knowledge/understanding of cars and competition.
That doens't mean we shouldn't do ALL the others too occasionally.

This has been discussed elsewhere and I'd like to share a viewpoint from that...... If there are 2 people with equal rep - say 100 - and you don't know HOW they got it( say, one was for tuning info supplied and the other was for chopping ). You ask a question about fitting a turbo. HOW do you know which one is likely to be accurate/helpful. They both have the same rep. See, that's the problem with spraying rep for any and all reasons.

Now, I don't believe there is a 'right' answer without an immensely complex system that isn't worth it. BUT, I do believe we can get a close approximation if everyone thinks about how they see rep in others. So rather than it being a quesiton of "how do I get more rep", think "how does rep help me with that persons post" and maybe it will have you re-evaluate when and why you give out rep and maybe it does become a good indicator of car-related value.

Having thrown THAT cat in, I look forrward to seeing the pigeos fly

so I have ANOTHER question to sit beside, taz' ....

How important is ANOTHER persons 'rep' to you and why ??

Please don't answer this with peoples names, it's meant for you to think deeper on the big picture and describe what you think about importance and why you think that.

I hand out rep for great chops, but since these particular people usually only hang around in miscellanous forum and chop forum, pretty much everyone knows the rep is for chopping.

so, that's fine within the chop forum.
But what of posts those folks then make outside ? If a rep of say 80, is for chops, how are people to know the 'value' of advice given on tuning ?

it's like if I turned up in chops and starting advising how to do a chop. Would a noob think my advice was sound because of my rep ? ( Of course, those who've seen my little forays into the chop world know, that I know my limits )
